Project Goal: Ruger No1 in 460WBY for Speer AGS Tungsten Solids

Well, that's my goal. I have a Ruger No 1 in 458 Lott and love it, but kinda want a bit more horsepower. It's a novelty for sure. I also have 50 of the African Grand Slam Tungsten core 500gr Speer projectiles that I have been saving for this project.
I've seen Rugers rechambered to 460 Weatherby, but have been unsuccessful in finding a gunsmith to perform the work to my rifle. The ones I've seen have been the blued/walnut variety which is pretty, but I like the tropical versions better.

So, anybody have recommendations on who in the states can do the conversion? It would have to be rechambered and the extractor work done.

It's none of my business, but you could sell the .458 Lott and likely walk away with enough cash to buy another #1 and have it rebarreled to .460 Wby. You could create your desired horsepower monster without destroying a most desirable #1 to do it.

Have you even fired the Lott at full power? It's pretty sporty in a #1. They're also so popular that if you dropped it, I doubt it would hit the ground much less bounce. A .460 Wby on the other hand is going to bounce upon resale until it dies a low bid death.

I've shot it quite a bit. It's all been the Hornady 500gr stuff rated at 2300fps, last batch I chronographed averaged 2274 (2288 high) on a 5 shot chain. They were surprisingly consistent. I was happy they were so close to the advertised 2300 even being from a slightly shorter barrel.

Have a look at simply reaming out to 458 express if you must molest a perfectly good No.1 and want more horsepower. Basic brass is easy to find. If you are dead set on ruining a No. 1 a call to SSK will probably scratch that itch. Good luck.

Recoil energy of a 460 Weatherby is over 100ft/lbs, should be an interesting experience in a No 1. Mine is 82ft/lbs and eye opening.

You are a better man than myself! I handled a #1 in 458 lott some years ago and concluded 7lb was too light for the caliber!

Mine tips the scale around 9lbs, it's a custom .500 job, can be a bit brutal. 460 wby, no thanks but I do wish him well.

I have only handled the factory 458 lott. Cabela's had it on sale for $600. It was brand new and if it had been 9lb I would have bought it.

Keep in mind this was back when you could still get the CZ 550, which was a much better choice for a 458 lott. Sadly I never got around to buying one of those 550's in 458 lott .

This from the Rhodesian that sold a perfectly functional and deadly Ruger No.1 in .375 H&H....

Oh it'll be an even rarer #1. Rarely shot, rarely carried, rarely held and rarely recommended.

The largest cartridge(physically) chambered by Ruger in the Number One is the 450/400 nitro. A few were chambered in the similar 450. nitro.

There is a reason for this, anything larger than the 450/400 or the 458 lott requires removal of a lot of metal from the action as well as the chamber portion of the barrel.

I would leave your number one alone. The 460 is a very large high pressure cartridge. There is nothing to be gained by pushing your luck and devaluing a nice and rare rifle.

Your tungsten core solids will go through any animal alive out of the 458 Lott.

Are you planning on whale hunting or shooting armored personnel carriers?

If so just get a proper 50 BMG.

They’ve been made in .577 nitro (3”) and a wildcat of that case necked to .620

I don't believe this is entirely correct. The barrel screws into the receiver ring which is basically the action since it is a drop block, I'm unaware of metal of the action that needs to be removed. Maybe you are thinking about the metal of the barrel due to rechambering. Mine has a new barrel so I can't speak to that.
