Red Recoil Pads

Just picked this up however the recoil pad needs a new recoil pad .....anyone know where to find a red one ?

The Midway ones are excellent in their own way but are not really the correct ones. The ‘Silvers’ pads are what you really need - they are not the easiest to finish properly though.

I don't get this thread. The OP buy a rifle with a bad pad? Pads in all the pix look OK, what gives? (Nope it is Whitworth worked over by the good people)?? What is this about? Confused!!

It's shown in a different makers case, at least that is what I gathered this was about. As far as needing a new pad, the one on my Whitworth looked good but was hard as a rock.

I guess so? Pad on my '84 Whitworth looks fine still, it never was what I would call a soft pad.

‘Silvers’ pads were considered ‘soft’ compared to a wood or steel butt plate but they are certainly far harder than most recoil pads. I like them on the right rifle.

I’ll stick with the Pachmayr red pad. I have one on a shotgun(pictured) and one on a rifle I don’t have a picture of. The color is exactly what I want and they do a great job of attenuating recoil.

Red with wood is the classic look. I have a Silver's pad that I am saving for my .600 NE build. It's about as soft as a brick but will finish up nicely and look the part when complete.

By the way, it's good to see Ruger using red again. Why they ever left for black I'll never know (as the red was always very popular).

I saw this on Midway's website. The simple (for Larry Potterfield) 42 step process of doing your own classic leather recoil pad. Only requires 4 or 5 specialty tools that only Larry has.

As comments above, Silvers or Pachmayr red. Yep as CTDolan says, the Silvers is as compliant as an hockey puck. Here's a pic of my pads for you to get an idea of the difference shades of red, Silvers on top and Pachmayr on bottom.

Looks to me as if the Silver’s is more of a traditional “red” pad but I have no doubt the Pachmayr is the better recoil pad.

Limpopo. Those pads look nice - and the wood is beyond gorgeous! I take it that this is the red version of the Silvers pad. IMO their orange version is just too orange. But I guess it can depend on the color of the wood, and with treatment the colour might change a little as well.

At least that has happend with the Pachmayr pads that I have. Age and a few coatings of linseed oil made them look less pale-pink-orange-brown, and more well... reddish.

Well. The effect is not dramatic, and to be precise it was not pure linseed oil, but rather something called Napier's Gun Stock Finish. That is a mostly boiled linseed oil based mixture, with a slight tint. But I guess most products for stock finish would work.

The pad on the right is a 3-4 years old and I just treat it at the same time as the stock, i.e. after a rainy day, end of season etc. The left one is not treated much. I think once in the year I've had it.

In reality, the results are not as good looking as in the pic, but better than untreated.

Love the pads. I won’t own a rifle that doesn’t have a silvers red or London orange pad affixed. They look great and they work wonderfully for balancing recoil reduction with quick shouldering!

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. I like the improvement especially on the Pachmayr (assume the right one is one).
