Reloader 22 in 300 H&H

Oh baby...first trial was a winner. More work to come.

After waiting months for a break in the temps, the forecast finally showed a low of 68 for this morning...so I planned all week to get out to the range early to take advantage.

I made the supreme sacrifice of getting up at 0600 on a Saturday ( ), so I could get to the range by 0730 (about a 55 mile drive).

Of course, I get to the range and it is 76 degrees already! Ugh.

Not going to waste the drive! I set up the Chronograph, get my targets up at 100 yards and wait for the magic 0800 to show (don't want to upset the neighbors with early shooting...range rule).

My first loads with Reloader 22 and the Barnes 180gr TTSX did well. I won't mention the charge weights, because they are well above book due to my lengthened throat and I don't want someone to inadvertently use my loads in a standard H&H chamber.

The two top loads I shot averaged 3,070 fps muzzle velocity and gave groups of 0.35 and 0.8 inches.

Promising indeed!

By the time I was finished at the bench (20 rounds of max 300 H&H and 5 rounds of 375 H&H) I could tell that my shooting was beginning to suffer a little...I'd catch myself not being relaxed as I was applying the last few ounces 0n the trigger. So I decided to save the inaugural shooting off the Trigger Stix for tomorrow, when my son and wife head out with me for some pistola shooting.

Time to clean brass and barrels!

R22 is a great powder for the H&H. I used to load it in my Rem 700 with 200gr Partitions and my brother took the load to Namibia and did well with it.

Oh, and for the record, I fired two more groups today with 220gr Partitions and two different loads of IMR 7828.

In in the half-dozen different 220gr Partition groups I've shot with the IMR 7828, all of the groups ranged from 1.25" to 1.75"...not inspiring at all.

If I knew all my shots would be short...maybe I could justify using this bullet. But shooting near bug-holes with the Barnes is going to be really hard to pass up!

I had gotten to the point where I thought maybe I would bring some 180 TTSX and some 220 Partitions. But with the way the early load development is going, I might just save the Partitions for the woods of North America. I have some 300 pound pigs in Missouri that need killing!

Good to know. I would think Re22 would be even more ideal for the 200gr, given its burning rate.

Some rifles will shoot well with a wide variety of components. Some seem a little more picky. The number ones seem to be on the picky side!

But that's ok...gives me an excuse to buy more components.

I'm no bullet and reloading expert, but I just love the TSX and TTSX. I wouldn't look and further. If you need a bigger bullet then that is what the .375 is for!

I have not done a side-by-side controlled penetration experiment between the 180 TTSX and the 220 Partition, but I doubt the Partition will penetrate deeper....and we know that it will be carrying less kinetic energy at any range due to the vastly superior B.C. of the Barnes.

So if the Barnes penetrates as deeply (my assumption) and has more kinetic energy (which is what disrupts tissue), and we know from super slow-motion the TTSX opens immediately, it is difficult to see how the Barnes is not the more versatile PG bullet.

Throw in the accuracy factor (at least in my rifle, up to this point) and it is looking more and more like my bullet debate is settled (kinda like the debate over global warming ).

All that's left is for Loodt, Lammie or Braun to get me in front of some game, and for me to put the bullet in the right spot!

I have always felt that 200 grs is the perfect match for the old .300 Hollands. Oh and the Partition worked just fine for PG. Mostly pass thru's on everything. I would never consider the Partition as inadequate for any non dangerous game. I too prefer a Triple Shock but if the NP shot better I would use it without hesitation.

Oh yeah, I have great regard for the Partition. There is a reason I have over a thousand of them in various calibers in my loading room!

Nothing I said above should be taken to mean I think the Partition is not a great bullet. I could hunt the rest of my life with nothing else and be fine with it!

Hi Tarbe,

You are doing right to settle on only that one bullet weight / load.

No doubt you have practiced very much with it from sticks and, you know exactly where it will hit at various yardages, within the geography and foliage characteristics of the area you will be hunting.

Such is a major part of the recipe to success on any safari.
