Rem 700 BDL 6mm - former Dallas PD sniper rifle

Made an interesting find at the Dallas Arms Collectors gun show in North Texas earlier today. This Remington 700 BDL in 6mm Rem. with a heavy barrel was said to be a former Dallas Police Department sniper rifle (and is evidenced by the imprinting below the grip). If so, I have to imagine it has been a long time since DPD would have bought a wooden stocked Rem 700 in 6mm Rem.; probably the early 1980's at the latest, but more likely the 1960's or 70's(?). I should have captured the proof marks on the barrel to figure out the date, but didn't to at the time. Regardless, other than some significant wear on the stock finish, the rifle looked to be in pretty good shape; and that heavy barrel was a nice feature. I'm not in the market for a 6mm Remington, although that was the caliber I got my first whitetail with; I am a 243 Win. guy these day. But this was sure a unique one...

Interesting but looks pretty rough. I handed down my BDL in 270 Win to my son about 5 years ago, I bought it in the late 60s, guided with it killed a lot (dozens) of elk and mule deer with it, 9 bears. It still looks a whole lot better than that. My son got his first elk with it. Still shoots nickel sized 3 shot groups at 100 yards with 150g Partitions. The BDL is the one on the bottom.

Fbi and others first scoped rifle were sually around .223 . In 80s .243 and 6mms and similsr were popular among police, counter terr units for urban use. Even Steyr made the SSG in .243 for such use . Then the 168 Bthp offically took over,but 100 grain Smk in 6mm kept around for a while.

Thanks for the insight on that. I figured it had been awhile since the 6mm Rem was in-service as a sniper round. That being said, my uncle was a competitive benchrest shooter, and 6mm Rem was his go-to caliber for it, and he won many a match with it.
