Remington 798 375h&h: Scope Rings and Mounts

I recently picked up a Remington 798 in 375H&H for a great deal ($430) at a local gun shop....

Can anyone tell me if they know whether or not "Leupold QR Low Rings" will give enough clearance to work the action on this rifle??

Also, I would be interested in any feedback / Likes and Dislikes of this rifle in the 375H&H.

A lot will depend on the size of your scope's objective lens.

I suspect you will need medium rings. I have several Interarms Mark X's. The low Leupold QR rings and bases, i.e. rings with the levers, barely work for a straight tube like the old 3X. I doubt it will clear with the 2x7 with low rings. I have a 30mm 1.5x5LR that required medium rings.

The Model 798 is based on a standard length, square bridge, Mauser 98 action chambered for centerfire hunting cartridges ranging from the .243 Winchester to the .458 Winchester Magnum. This is an all steel, controlled feed action using a flat bottom receiver with an integral recoil lug, one-piece bolt with dual locking lugs plus a third safety lug and a bolt guide, full length extractor, solid steel one-piece bottom iron/magazine box/trigger guard, hinged magazine floor plate, and all of the usual Mauser 98 deluxe features.
The Model 798, however, is another matter. It is definitely a step up from the Models 700/Seven (and most other rifles on the market today) for big game hunting purposes. The 798 is based on a more expensive, superior action suitable for the most critical applications, including hunting the world's largest and most dangerous game.

The Model 798 is a great value, even at the full list price and you have procured the Emperor of all calibres.

what configuration of optics are you willing to mount ??

Monish- Thanks for the article that is very helpful... I plan to mount a Leupold vx2 3-9X40, The reason for this is, though I bought this rifle for Africa (Someday...Hopefully sooner than later) I also want to be familiar with it as possible in hunting conditions which means I am planning to use it for Whitetail Deer and Elk (Stateside).. So I figured the 3-9x40 would be good compromise and then with QD Rings I could also pop off the scope for "Close Combat" with a cape buff. which I think will be my first animal I want to take in africa. Please let me know if you think I am making a good decision with this configuration or not.

It is definately a little overkill for the Whitetail but I have also heard it performs quite well with a 230gr solid with little meat damage.

David.............dead is dead. Practicing with the .375 and getting so that it feels like an old friend is far more important than whether or not it is 'too much gun' for whitetail.

It's a funny thing that in Africa no one thinks twice about bumping off a springbuck or a duiker with a .375, but the hunters in North America think it is something that is reserved only for the big and nasty. It is just local mindset. In reality what earthly difference does it make?

It is a simple truth that when you talk of a 'do-it-all' cartridge, just by the nature of what you are asking it to do, it will undoubtedly be more than you need for some animals and perhaps not quite as much as you would like to have with others if things do not go according to Hoyle.

Take it, use it and have fun. Pay no attention to the recoil pansies.

375 mounts on 798

I picked one up in 375 a few months back, and love it. Shoots great. I put Weaver type bases on it, with the new QRW Leupold mounts. I put a Leupold on it, but it is a 1.5x5 I think with a small 20mm tube. Bolt works fine with this set up, and returns to zero fine.

3-9x40 is fine in 1 inch tube,take a scope in cross hair bold rectile .

Naaaah! this is a universal caliber from 235 Grs to 380 grns of bullet weights can take any game on the planet earth I have been using my dad .375 H&H Mag double by Hollands & my weatherby 375H&H since inception of my hunting days and have taken maximum game with this calibre using 270 and 300 silver tips, thats the reason I have christened this as a "EMPEROR". Its a caliber for long range shooting & close charges .
Now we have the 300 grn failsafes bullets giving amazing results.

So welcome to the 375 H&H Magnum Club , you would be happy all your life to have procured the BOSS of all calibers. in a fine make and tried & tested action.

Your whiteees need the 375 treatment use a 235 PSP , wont mince the meat .

Take a Duggaboy right in the chest with a 300 grs and you would be a very elated hunter.
