The original 1925 order ledger about my H&H single shot includes the words "Lyman Sight." The tang of my rifle is indeed drilled for such sight--with the holes spaced exactly 1.5" apart, each hole looking pretty shallow and measuring 0.150" across. Approximate height of the sight to match the V sight on the barrel would have been 2."

Unfortunately, though, when I took possession of the rifle a few years ago, the Lyman tang sight had been long gone. I would now like to replace it. Would any of you know which of the Lyman tang sights I should try?

The reason is that I've decided that my safari-after-next (2023) will be an iron-sight safari. My aging eyes would do much better with a Lyman than with the barrel-mounted V.

Any ideas? I know this is a pretty obscure subject, but I thought I'd ask.

We would love to see your rifle bud, what caliber & type of action is it ?

Hard to say what Lyman sight it had, does the H&H ledger not give you a little more clues ?

I have Lyman peeps on a couple of my Old Timers, the peep helped for a bit but I now just slip a pair of 1 power reading glasses on & can use the open sights, a bugger in the Bush/Jungle, more so if wet/raining but it works !

Thanks for chiming in. It is a falling block built around a Webley 1902-type action, chambered for .375 H&H Flanged Magnum. 28” barrel. Sometime after the War a set of claw mounts was added, which now sport a Zeiss Diatal 6x32.

Here are a couple pics:

And here’s the tang, drilled as I have described.

I'd contact Lyman first and see what they can do. They still make some of their classic tang sights but whether or not they have a base that would fit your rifle, I can't say.

Montana Vintage Arms makes their own versions of oldschool tang sights and they might be able to help too.

Tom call the Marble Sight Company or look up your rifle on one of their product listings. I was able to get a tang sight for a savage Model 29A (circa 1940) recently. Marble actuslly made the sights for a lot of OEM that offered that option. http://www.marblearms.com/ or call (906)428 - 3710

Give Bruce dow at dow arms room here in fla he is an old target shooter gunsmith.he may even have one.real good fellow

Beautiful rifle & outfit, nice to see the tang is tapped & not the wood like a lot of others !

Most likely not hard to find a Lyman to fit the hole spacing but the height & peep arm height will be the issue ?

The Marble Tang sights are adjustable for height and windage. Apart from that there are several height options to choose from.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
