I'm looking for loading data with retumbo powder for the following calibers and bullet combo

1. 416 rem mag 400grs
2. 500/416 400 grs
3. 460 wby mag with 400,450,500 grs bullets
if anyone has any loading data willing to share is highly appreciated
thank you

I may be wrong, but Retumbo seems a little slow for those rounds. The .416 Rem usually takes powders like H380, H4350…
The .460 slightly slower: H4831, H4350.
No idea about the .500/.416.

ADI who make Retumbo (sold as AR2225 powder in Australia) list loads for the 416 Rem with a 400gn bullet, but the slowest powder they list is H4350 (2209 in Australia). I dont think you could possibly get enough Retumbo in the case of the 416Rem.

Similar story with the 460 WBY, but ADI lists up to H4831 (AR2213SC in Australia) with 500 and 600gn bullets. You could MAYBE get enough Retumbo into the 460 to make it work, but dont think it would be worth the effort.

ADI dont list data for the 500/416, but it would be the same situation. Retumbo burn rate is just too slow.

Retumbo isn’t too slow in the .500/.416. I’ve used Staball HD more or less successfully, which is supposedly slower on Hodgdon’s latest burn rate chart. The only real question is whether the load will regulate successfully. In my rifle, I’d start at 100 grains with a conventional 400 grain bullet, chronograph, and go from there. Without knowing whether your rifle runs hot or cold, I can’t make a more specific suggestion.

Retumbo is too slow for the 416 Rem. I load a 450 grain in the 41 Rigby with 101 grains of Retumbo. The slowest would be in the 4350 range for the Rem and still requires a compressed load to push 2400 fps. Stay in the Varget/RL15 range. As for the 416/500 , another area of AH shows H1000 range. Retumbo is still too slow and Hodgdon recommends 4350 to 4831 range to work well with the Weatherby even to 600 grain bullet on their data site.

Staball is pretty close, not to say I would use Retumbo if I had any of a bunch of other powder choices. Retumbo is a very popular powder with the ultra-mag crowd, maybe you could find someone willing to trade something a bit more in-line with what you need?

Retumbo does well in 6.5 PRC and 28 Nosler. Not what I'd go to in 416, use Varget instead. No knowledge on 500/416 or 460.

In the 500/416 I use imr 7828. retumbo is a bit to slow in my opinion to get enough powder to get a load that will shoot to regulation of a double.

I’ve had great results with 7828, but supply has become a real issue. Do you know of any reliable sources?

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP

That’s what I thought. Over the next month or so, I’ll be testing Grand, n165, and n565 as replacements. Nothing is easy.

The Woodleigh Reloading Manual lists AR2217 (H1000) as the slowest recommended powder for the 500/416 with a 400 grain bullet. This is about the only help I can be.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
