Bob, if I understood you right, the VX6 1-6 had better glass than the VX6 2-12x42 you mentioned right? also you've killed plains game with the V6 1-6x24 correct?
No, I have not even mounted the 1-6 yet and the glass quality should be the same within the VX6 line. It should be a step up from the VXR or VX3 lines of Leopold scopes. I've used the 2-12 version a lot and killed more with it than any other centerfire rifle and scope I have. Comparing it to my Swarovski Z6i, which I think lists at about $3200, I like the Leupold VX6 2-12 just as much and have two of them... I think they cost under $1000, in fact the one I got on a couple piggy back deals and it was downright cheap.
As for the VX6 1-6, I have only looked through it but from what I see, it is my favorite so far with the firedot 4 reticle... That could change when I get it mounted and hunt with it? It was ordered and arrived like a day before I left on my last big Africa trip... so no time to sight it in. I took it with as a spare but never needed it.
If you are on a budget, I suggest the Leupold scopes as a good high quality option and for a 375 or bigger gun that you are not looking to keep the weight down.. I really prefer their 30mm tube scopes over the 1" models. If you want lighter weight or a more compact size, go with a 1" tube. I also really like the illuminated reticles.
e got it narrowed to a 1-6x24 from various mfg's to a 2-7 or 8 x 33 Luey. I don't want to remove my rear sight if I can help it, nor do I want to raise scope too high and lose a good cheek weld.
So an option is the VXR 2-7 .... I was "scoping out" some variations to respond here and got sidetracked on Optics Planet... just ordered 3 demo scopes, basically all of the above for about 40% off. $266 for a 2-7 and $500 for a VX6 1-6. Best I've seen!
BTW, I can see my front and rear sight on 2x but it is not pronounced and I have never noticed it when shooting an animal.
Again depending upon budget, the VX6 is a lot of scope for the money and you might consider the 1-6 or 2-12 models... Either should do fine with the 1x only having an advantage for elephant, possibly lion close up in a Kalahari type hunt, or possibly buffalo. However 2 x will do ok in those situations as well. I rarely find myself dialing up much more than 6x on a 376 unless I want a close look at something, which does happen. The 1-6 is also a more compact scope. On a 416 the 1-6 is the clear choice, and it is a good choice on a 375, but so is a scope with a minimum of 2x... I would draw the line at 3x being too much for the minimum power. Unless you wanted a fixed power for reasons mostly only clear to old guys in AK

Then perhaps a 2.5x or a 4x? But those are not for me on a 375... Now if your budget is lower than a VX6, I would suggest a Leupold VXR in 2-12.
