Recently I scored a great deal on a Burris 2-7×, so today (after the .308 kill thread) I finished the "extra" work to get it mounted on my Savage.

The Vortex scout scope which lived on this gun for a long while was much fatter and had to sit higher for it to clear. The Burris was able to get set much lower with the rear portion of the rail having some material removed to provide just enough clearance. To me, it was well worth the effort to avoid going to a higher set of rings.

The previous scope did it's job well enough, and can't really be complained about for the cost. This scope is just a solid step up, especially when picked up on the used market. Even the encasing bronze and brown spray paint job (that took a lot of acetone to remove!) did not ruin the deal.

Not being satisfied with the available scout options from Leupold, I'm very happy with this scope so far. If I remember, I'll update with a range report after it's had some shooting done underneath.

Weird thar you just posted this as I have been struggling with a scout scope decision for my Ruger. I alway was not over thrilled by Leupolds Offerings.
That's half why I posted. It's been frustrating at times finding something that isn't a piece of junk, or an overpriced scope with only half the features I wanted.

So far the Burris seems to be an upgrade in both optical performance, fit and finish, and mounting options. The choice to take a dremmel to the rail is not a judge against the scope itself. It saved me from using lesser quality or higher set mounts.

I have the same scope, love it. It has taken some abuse as my son was coming up as a hunter without issue. With the 16.25" barrel 150 gr factory TTSX's line up with the 100, 200 and 300 yard hash marks. Scope on 7x 100 yard zero. 400 mark is way high haven't tried adjusting the zero. 349 yards has been longest kill on an antelope, he made a perfect shot with some coaching.

The next step is probably to remove the brake. I don't mind it hunting solo, but it's got to be unpleasant for others. Still beats AR pistols though.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
