Domestic Wood Shooting Sticks

Since our inception, we have received thousands of requests to offer a more affordable version of our African Shooting Sticks that feature our incredibly strong two-piece aluminum take-down connector. The problem was volume. When we started out over 10 years ago we were ordering components in less than 100 piece quantities. Our connectors cost so much to produce in small quantities we could not offer a lower price. Our solution was to offer an off-the-shelf friction fit copper connector but it was not as bullet-proof as our aluminum model.

Today we are ordering our incredibly strong, two-piece aluminum take-down connector by the thousands. As a result, we are pleased to offer you a more affordable way to own a set of our African Shooting Sticks.

You Set the Options
Our new A la Carte ordering allows you to build your own set of domestic wood shooting sticks. With our Hickory sticks below, you can select one or all of the available options. You control how much you spend. If you want to get a basic set with Red Oak shafts, sand-blasted aluminum connectors that are silver in color and machine sewn tops without a case, they cost $199. If you want the more rigid Hickory Shafts, a heavy-duty canvas carrying case, black matte annodized connectors, and hand-sewn circular tops - you can get all that for just $229. If you choose the Hickory Shafts, you'll have the opportunity to add individual options or if you select all the options for your Hickory Sticks you'll save $20.

Are you taller than 6' 4" ? You have the option of upgrading to the XL Model for and additional $20 when you choose the "fully loaded" sticks.

Domestic Wood Shafts
Both our Red Oak and Hickory sticks are sprayed a medium brown polyurethane stain to make sure it blends in with your surroundings. The sticks measure 70” when assembled and the top and bottom sections are 36” when taken apart so they will fit in any full-length, airline approved gun case with room to spare. Because we kiln dry the shafts to remove moisture and make them extra stiff-they weigh less than 2.5 pounds or about half what the most popular all aluminum brand weighs.

First, grasp the two legs that have the black bumpers on them and post the shorter leg (the one without the tops used for padding) out front, in line with where you want to point the rifle. ABOUT OUR SHOOTING STICKS

Many years ago we only offered one product; African Shooting Sticks. We set out to make the best ones available and the rest of the business developed from that first, initial product. As a result of the success of our original offering, we have expanded our shooting stick line to include two grades of African Shooting Sticks (Premium and Entry Level), the same two grades in bipods, several made from carbon fiber, and the most beautiful monopod on the market, our Seasoned Hunter Staff. Every model is designed to fit into an airline approved gun case so you can practice with the same set you take with you during your travels.

Our shooting sticks are made one at a time in the USA and are the lightest, quietest, most rigid sticks available and the only ones that have an unconditional lifetime warranty. Most other sticks are heavier, louder and flimsy by comparison and come with a one year limited warranty.

The heart of our "Premium" Shooting Stick offering is our custom designed and patent pending connector which is milled from a solid block of aircraft aluminum that is virtually indestructible. This is the same mechanism that helped us win the highly coveted "Gray's Best" award and we use it on all our Premium Grade and Entry Level offerings. Our "Premium" Shooting Sticks are really in a class of their own from both a functional and aesthetic perspective, especially when you select our top of the line Platinum version with exotic wood shafts and exotic hide tops. Our "Premium" Shooting Sticks offer:

• The only carbon fiber shooting stick on the market for unmatched rigidity in under a pound.
• A positive locking connector that will not unintentionally come loose in the field that is the strongest one to be found anywhere. On every other Shooting Stick the connector is one of the weaker parts and on ours it is the strongest part.
• Unmatched functionality, noise suppression and rigidity (due to the connector).
• Shafts hand-turned from a half dozen of the worlds' most stunning exotic woods (Platinum), Brazilian Cherry (Gold) or hickory (Silver).
• In terms of tops to pad your fore end, you have the choice of leather and either Zebra or Cape buffalo tops with the Platinum version. Gold and Silver versions come with one set of leather tops.
• Platinum and Gold versions are offered in multiple lengths so everyone can get a pair that fits them just right.
• Platinum versions offer the option of engraving your name (or a lucky recipient's) on the connector. To make sure the engraving (which goes down to the aluminum) really pops we anodize the connectors in matte black.

Added in 2015, our Turnbull Color Case Hardened Shooting Stick leverages all of our experience and enables us to elevate the functionality inherent in all of our shooting sticks to a work of art. And, in 2016 we create the Brush Stick that is suitable for the thick ground cover of Africa which can be used from a standing or kneeling/seated position.

We also have an "Entry level" offering that is the best value of any shooting stick on the market. It is available in two domestic wood species; Hickory and Red Oak. It has the same attention to detail we incorporate into all of our products, but the construction is simplified.

Our last offering, the Seasoned Hunter Staff (monopod) is a thing of beauty and one of the nicest products we make. It is designed to help those with bad knees or a bunch of seasons behind them navigate the toughest terrain with additional support and offers too many custom touches to list. Super Compact Shooting Sticks

Our Super Compact Shooting Sticks are for those who like to travel with their firearms incognito in a shorter take-down case (Blaser�, double rifles) and need a more compact set of shooting sticks.

Instead of one set of anodized take-down connectors, these have two. The shorter wood sections make these sticks even more rigid than our other models. To make sure you can plant them in the ground, pointed tips are always facing down whether you use one, two, or all three sections.

Our Most Versatile Sticks
Use the top section alone to shoot from the prone position. Use the top two sections if you want metal points on the bottom, or the top and bottom sections for quieter wood bottoms (approximately 48" long). This combination is idea for shorter hunters, or to navigate tough terrain, or shoot from the kneeling position. Use all three sections to shoot from the standing position.

Feather Weight & Standard Options
The Feather Weight Model utilizes red-toned exotic African Sapele, a light-weight but very rigid exotic hardwood for the top and bottom sections. Hickory, stained a medium brown color, is used for the middle sections.

Our Standard Model has hickory for all three sections.
Both sticks are stained a medium brown color to ensure that they blend in with your surroundings.

Several years ago we began experimenting with a connector we could use to make take-down shooting sticks. We developed dozens of take-down connector prototypes over the years but for one reason or another they did not meet our criteria; we wanted them to have a very strong, positive locking system and be very easy to put together/take apart with your bare hands. Most importantly, we wanted the addition of the connector to increase the rigidity and strength of the shafts.

Well, the wait is finally over! These are the most rigid, quiet and functional African Shooting Sticks on the market. Our customers tell us they like the rigidity of them which allows them to lean into the shot, how the noise suppression bumpers eliminate the "dinner bell" noise made by the legs of all-aluminum models clanking together and how the points on the bottoms anchor them securely in place.

Our Secret
The heart of our new model is a patent pending, two piece aluminum take-down connector designed by a specialty fittings engineer that has three points of contact for tremendous strength. (See photo below) Putting them together is fast and easy; they screw together by hand and assembly takes just a few minutes. As an added feature, the connector incorporates a rubber gasket that compresses with the last turn to prevent them from vibrating loose when traveling cross country in a safari vehicle.

Each connector is precision milled from a solid piece of high strength, light weight Aluminum bar stock and is then sand blasted to a non-reflective, matte finish. Since almost all of our Platinum Grades are ordered with a person's name engraved into the connectors, we hard anodize them in matte black so the engraving really pops.The seam between the connector pieces would almost be impossible to feel if we did not put a small micro-bevel on the two (otherwise sharp) edges that are exposed when the sticks are taken apart.

Attention to Detail
The outside diameter of the connectors is the same as the domestic and exotic hardwood shafts to provide a uniform thickness from top to bottom. We hand sand every shaft and then hand rub two coats of satin gloss marine quality polyurethane to them to protect them from the elements. We turn the last 4 inches of the wooden shafts down to a �" so they fit inside the connectors. The Gold Grade has the connectors compressed onto the shafts while Platinum Grade connectors receive special treatment. We pin the top portion using bamboo, just like they pin the handle of a samurai sword to the tang, and secure the bottom portion with a concealed screw.

Designed for Protection
All our African Shooting Sticks come with padded tops. The leather tops make sure you do not have any fish and game related inspection delays while traveling internationally. Zebra skin or Cape buffalo tops are available on the Platinum version. Many of you told us how you scratched up your very expensive rifles' fore end using the unpadded, coarse sticks provided by your African outfitter so this is a very important issue to consider. Our zebra skin and Cape buffalo tops take you back to the Dark Continent regardless of what you are after and protect the fore-end of your rifle from unnecessary "beauty marks".

Due to the large number of special orders we have received for different lengths, we are pleased to announce that you can now order our Platinum & Gold Sticks in five different lengths so anyone can now find a set that fits them perfectly. Brush Sticks

Both sections versus 46" top section
Last year, we went to Africa to hunt plains game in very thick brush. We brought our 3-section Super Compact Shooting Sticks because we were traveling light with shorter, take-down rifle cases. Thinking we’d be standing up to shoot, we put all three sections together at the start of the hunt. However, the brush was so thick the only way to get a clean shot through the heavy brush was to remove the 27” bottom section and shoot from the kneeling or sitting position. From this position, we could shoot upward into the animal’s vitals and avoid having the bullet deflected by tough Acacia limbs. We have seen similar cover in Texas, Florida and other parts of the USA depending on the season and game being pursued.

Based on this experience, our new Brush Sticks were born.

What is different about these sticks?
To start, the top section is 46”, a full 10” longer than our other shooting stick models to allow greater ease of use from a kneeling or sitting position. To make sure these sticks are as rigid as all of our other models despite the longer top section, we made them a “fat” 5/8” diameter. In addition to hunting in thick cover, we think these will be a favorite among turkey hunters and those who take long shots in open country and need the added stability of shooting from the sitting position. When both sections are put together, they are perfect for taking shots from the standing position. Traveling with them is easy as the top section is always 46” which means they will fit in just about any full-length airline gun case as most of these have an inside dimension of 48”. If you order the XL size, we add the additional length to the bottom section. See sizing recommendations at the bottom of this page.

The new Brush Sticks are also the perfect height to use as a staff when navigating uneven ground. If you have been watching the “Boddington Experience” this season you have seen Craig do this with the top two sections of our SuperCompact shooting sticks (which are the same length) during many of the mountain hunting episodes. To use your new Brush Sticks as a staff, simply slide the doubled up, heavy-duty cord-lock that is on the top section down so it is just above the brown bumpers that are just above the top connector to keep the three legs together. When you want to spread them out to take a shot, simply slide the cord lock up are far as it will go and spread the sticks as needed. I know this sounds almost too simple but that is all you have to do to unlock the versatility to this new model!

Color Case Hardening is the process of hardening the surface of a metal object while allowing the metal deeper underneath to remain soft, thus forming a thin layer of harder metal (called the "case") at the surface. For iron or steel with low carbon content, which has poor to no hardenability of its own, the case-hardening process involves infusing additional carbon into the case. Case-hardening is usually done after the part has been formed into its final shape, but can also be done to increase the hardening element content of bars to be used in a pattern welding or similar process. Our new Carbon Fiber take-down shooting sticks are the first of their kind. Carbon fiber has an amazing set of properties: it is 4 times stiffer than steel and yet weighs less than aluminum. Designed to fit into any airline approved gun case, these unique sticks are availalbe in both tripod and bipod versions. Especially created for sheep/mountain hunters and hunters who wants the lightest and most rigid shooting sticks available.

Our customers tell us they like the rigidity of our carbon fiber sticks which allows them to lean into the shot. Prone Tripod - "Shorties"

We have added Shorties to our line-up in response to dozens of requests from two very different groups of hunters: The first group-primarily varmint hunters-wanted a short set to use while shooting from the prone position. When these hunters were doing spot and stalk hunting of groundhogs or prairie dogs, the metal rests that attached to the bottom of their heavy varmint rifles dug into their backs when using a sling. They wanted a stable, light-weight model that would fit in their back pocket.

The second group- high-volume dove hunters-wanted a short pair of rests to place their shotguns on while they were cooling off. These hunters typically use two or three guns to avoid overheating them and did not want to have to put their fine shotguns against a bush or on the ground while cooling off. Our tripod keeps your gun off the ground and promotes maximum air flow around the barrels. All of the tops are leather so you do not have to worry about any plastic melting to your barrel. If you are shooting a side-by-side shotgun, we recommend you order a double rifle rest for extra stability.

Shorties measure approximately 18.5” overall and come with our hand-sewn circular leather tops.

In our Silver Grade, we offer kiln-dried Hickory which is the same species they use to make axe handles. It is a very tough and bend resistant wood. We rub a dark brown poly stain on it to make sure it blends in with your surroundings.

In our Gold Grade, we offer three exotic woods that are finished in a clear poly to let the natural beauty of the wood come through. The exotic woods used to craft these cost almost as much as the selling price of this offering. Thus we have to use the exotic wood on-hand after making other products. For that reason, we reserve the right to substitute other, equally attractive exotic woods.

Heavy-Duty Bipod African Shooting Sticks

In 2011 my brother-in-law and I hunted Zimbabwe with PH Len Taylor. Over the campfire and a few sundowners, we discussed the pros and cons of bipods versus tripods. Len is a big proponent of bipods because he feels they are a second or two faster to set up and in some cases,that can make the difference between going home empty handed or with a great trophy. He challenged us to build him a bipod that would be rock steady and virtually indestructible and these bipods are our answer to that challenge. We scaled up our 5/8” connector and wood shafts to a full 1” for tough as nails durability in a flex-free platform.

The L size bipods measure 65” when assembled. The top and bottom sections for both sizes are no more than 40” when taken apart. We use a ¼” diameter industrial strength shock cord through holes drilled in the tops to fasten them together. With a little practice, you can have the legs taken apart in under a minute so you can use the top section alone for shots from the kneeling or sitting position. The bipods are designed to fit into an airline approved gun case when taken down and come in a thick canvas carrying case.

The connector screws together by hand and has extra-large threads to ensure that it will lose mud and dirt quickly with a light tap against your shoe sole. We hard anodize the precision milled, solid aircraft aluminum connector in a non-reflective matte black finish and we turn each shaft to fit flush with the connector so it is a consistent diameter from top to bottom. When the sticks are used from the standing position, the pointed bottoms are quiet and will securely post in a variety of terrain from sandy to rocky.

We offer kiln-dried Ash, which is the same domestic hardwood used for baseball bats. In this diameter it is very rigid without the added weight of Hickory. We rub a dark brown poly stain on it to make sure it blends in with your surroundings.

They come with thick rubber tops to protect your stock while shooting and a thick canvas case for protection during air transportation.

Seasoned Hunter Staff

This new item came about as a result of one of our customer’s requests. After two knee replacements, this “seasoned citizen” wanted a stout walking staff that would double as a shooting stick. Based on his initial feedback, we hit the bulls-eye. This sturdy 1” Diameter Stalking Staff utilizes four precision engineered aluminum connectors/caps, is available in a variety of exotic woods and is topped with Fallow deer antler that you rest your rifles’ fore-end on. We wrap the antler with leather for extra padding. This is a rock-solid Stalking Staff that will help you safely travel across your favorite hunting grounds and extend your ability to place a shot accurately by a considerable distance. The custom sized versions will also appeal to photographers and birders as it is the perfect height to rest a set of binoculars or a camera on for distortion free viewing or picture taking.

Terry Wieland, the Shooting Editor from Gray’s Sporting Journal told us that in many of the old castles in Europe, stalking staffs are displayed that were passed down from one generation to the next for hundreds of years. We think ours can surpass that longevity record if properly cared for due to the rugged construction incorporated into every one we build. One day you can look forward to passing these on to your son, daughter, Grandson, Granddaughter or some other deserving companion.

The heart of all of our take-down models is our patent pending, aluminum take-down connector designed by a specialty fittings engineer who has over twenty five years of experience. This connector features two points of contact for tremendous strength. Putting them together is fast and easy as they screw together by hand without any tools in just a few seconds.

Each connector is precision milled from a solid piece of high strength, light weight Aluminum bar stock and is then anodized to a black, non-reflective, matte finish. The seam between the connector pieces would almost be impossible to feel if we did not puta small micro-bevel on the two (otherwise sharp) edges that are exposed when the sticks are taken apart.

If you take your Stalking Staff apart, you can use the top metal pointed section alone for shots from the kneeling or sitting position.

The outside diameter of the connectors is the same as the wooden shafts to provide a uniform thickness from top to bottom. We turn the top, two middle sections and the bottom of the wood shafts down to a 3/4” diameter so they fit flush inside the connectors. We hand sand every shaft and then apply two coats of satin gloss marine quality polyurethane to them to protect them from the elements. Each of the wood species we offer has a unique appeal.

Platinum grade features any of the exotic woods and the bottom section or “burr” (the most desirable bottom portion of the shed) from the base of a Fallow Deer Antler. We then wrap the crotch of the antler in hand-braided Italian leather to protect your rifle's fore-end. The hole used to secure the top to the shaft is expertly matched with a custom blend of antler based mix that matches the color and texture of the antler.The braided Italian leather lanyard includes an antler button to help keep the cord around your palm and is further adorned with an antler tine. The overall length of this model is determined by your specific height and whether or not you shoot a scoped or open sighted rifle. The bottom of this piece features a wood point. It comes with a high quality, heavy duty carrying case. The level of hand finishing and top-shelf components incorporated into this model makes it the most function and beautiful model we offer. This model can also be engraved with up to 30 characters for an additional $49.

Presentation Grade African Shooting Sticks

In order to gauge whether there was a market for this item, we donated our first set to the Dallas Safari Club in January, 2010. We put a value commensurate with the over 100 hours of art and engraving work that went into creating them and were interested to see what they would bring. Keep in mind that many luxury items went for far less than full retail in 2009 and 2010 so we were a bit nervous. When the bidding closed, the Leopard shown went for just over 90% of retail value. We were very pleased with the selling price. We felt if a stock piece went for that amount, people placing a custom order for their animal would be willing to pay the extra premium.

Mark Petersen of New England Custom Guns does all the engraving work on these stunning creations. Mark beautifully restored the engraving on an old Drilling of mine a few years back and thus he was at the top of the list when I was looking for someone to handle this project. We had a handful of solid brass connectors made for this special offering and that is what he builds upon. First, he welds a Dangerous Game quarter rib with a Sterling silver border onto one of the top sections. He then adds a Sterling Silver border around the quarter rib. After that he builds up the image of your choosing onto this raised panel. The image is accented with Sterling Silver fern border band inlays for additional depth and realism. On the top and bottom of each solid brass piece he engraves elegant sterling bands to add interest.

The Custom has the raised Dangerous Game quarter rib welded to one of the top sections and features an image of your choosing. In addition to the main attraction above it also come with the beautiful detail work done on the Border model described below. This beautiful creation utilizes black African Wenge shafts, hand sewn Elephant tops and the heft and beauty of solid brass connectors.

Border Banded

The Border Band has beautiful Sterling Silver fern border band inlays on the top and bottom of each set of connectors. This understated look is accented with fancy dark brown Morado (similar to Turkish Walnut) shafts, hand sewn Elephant tops and the heft and beauty of solid brass connectors.

Dark Continent Shooting Sticks

Red, black and brown are the colors most commonly found on Maasai warrior shields and that is why we selected three stunning exotic woods in the same colors for this first in a series of limited edition Shooting Sticks. The wood shafts are hand-finished from African Sapele (red), African Wenge (black) and African Shedua (brown). We engrave each of the top three connectors with the name of its wood species so you will always remember them. Only one dozen sets of this special model will be made and each one comes with a numbered and signed letter of authenticity. A different Dark Continent model will be introduce each year.
