SOUTH AFRICA: 20th Safari

Just got back from my 20th Safari, I’m 46 and self made so I’m pretty happy to have pulled off another trip.

The main goal was to take my brother for Sable and Buff, he’s never hunted either. Really fun trip. I managed to take a few fallow deer (it was the roar) and some kudu and such.

Reentry is hard!

The buff was shot with a H&H Mauser from 1924 in 375H&H …

Pretty much everything else, including eland was shot with a very ugly Tika 260 Rem with custom tacti stock, Z6i 2.5-15x44, with turrets. Shots out to 550 meters. Paired with range finding binos it felt like 300-400 meter shots where chip shots. 143gr Hornady ELDX loads. I kind of hate the rifle but …. Man it flat out shoots.

Well done. Thanks for the report. Been awhile since I was in RSA. Seems fallow deer are getting more popular there? I remember seeing a few years ago, but those are very nice!

Fallow have been in the eastern cape since the 1810s. It’s a super fun and different hunt to hunt them in the roar.

That is impossible, Eland are HUGE and with those armor plates they have, you simply need more gun!!

I’ve shot, LDE, East African, Livingston and a bunch of Cape.

The only one I had trouble with was the Livingston in Mozambique. Shot him low with a 375HH using 300gr Barnes X. Tracked him for days before we finally got him.

I’ve used 9.3x62, 375HH, 300 Weatherby, 300 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 260 Rem, 6.5x284 and 7x57.

If properly hit they die ….. if poorly hit they go far. Yes I think the 9.3x62 is perfect and a 375HH can work great but … let’s be real, I’ve seen them shot with the 243 and they died in 50 yards.
