7 days today until I am wheels up on my next Safari. This trip started a little under a year ago. Two friends had planned a Safari in the Limpopo. I was almost as excited as them in the lead up. About 2 months before their departure it occurred to me that there was no reason for me to not go with them so hasty plans were put in place.
That trip was initially planned by J to hunt a Cape Buffalo. I was very keen on hunting my first Buff however J would have first crack so I would be hunting PG until he had a bull in the salt. After 7 days of enjoyable PG hunting it was my turn. 5 days of hard hunting resulted in multiple close encounters but no shot opportunities. The first track we took resulted in a Bull blowing out of his bed only 7m from us. As we crept along in silence there was a sudden snort from behind a wall of thorns. We froze and moments later the scrub erupted as the bull took off flattening the scrub as he went. For that split second we didn’t know if he was charging towards or away from us. I have thought about Buff every day since and now I have my chance.
Outfitter: @BAYLY SIPPEL SAFARIS
PH: Nic Junge
Concession: Madikwe East, Limpopo
Rifle: CZ550 458 Lott with Leupold Deltapoint Pro
Ammo: Handload 480gr Woodleigh Hydros
Madikwe East is a 12,000 acre concession bordering Madikwe National Park. It is mostly veldt with a mountain range running along the southern side. There are large areas of Sikkelbos thorn bushes which seems to be where the Buffalo spend the daylight hours. During my last trip we had several leopard and spotted hyena sightings as well as Honey Badger so plenty of interesting critters getting around. I took a Sable, Zebra, Impala and Warthog with my 9.3x62.
Busy week ahead with final preparations before arriving in Joburg 1st July. Will be getting in late so the hunt starts on the 2nd.
