Hunting reports
Africa
1
Just returned from hunting the east Somerset region of South Africa on Thursday evening. We hunted with Cape Hunt Safaris and I can't speak highly enough of the service or the people we dealt with. We were both looked after exceptionally well and took some excellent animals. On a hunt that was supposed to be for 6 species we both took 10 animals, myself of 9 species. Originally the plan was for Zebra, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Kudu and Warthog, as we hunted we saw some extras that I couldn't pass on, Eland, Lechwe, another Warthog and a Red Hartebeest cow. I used my 30 06 shooting 180gn accubonds @ 2800 fps, the combination performed flawlessly, the damage done by the accubonds was incredible, I had 1 shot kills on 7 of the 10 animals with follow up shots on the Gemsbok and 1 Warthog, maybe not necessary but I'd rather end it quickly and I didn't allow for the wind on my Red Hartebeest and she required another 2 to stop her, but nothing got out of sight so no tracking was required. I was pretty happy about that fact as I have heard some horror stories of these animals toughness and ability to run for hours even when well hit. We had 7 days hunting with the last of our animals taken on the last morning of the hunt, this however was number 20 between the two of us. Our food and accommodation was excellent and as stated the guides were exceptional blokes. The taxidermy is being done over there and will hopefully be here mid next year. Will add photos soon

Congrats @Poz !

Thanks for sharing, well done on some nice trophies!

Fine looking trophies Poz! You did well.

Great report, like the old mature eland. Nice pic of the bullet performance, congratulations.

Sounds like you had a great experience. Some nice looking trophies. Congrats. I too liked the pics of the bullets. I also used AB's in my 7 mag last yr in Africa. 160 grain bullets. I too had excellent performance and mostly DRT kills. Bruce

The 2 on the right were from my 30 06 the other 5 were from my hunting mates 35 Whelan

Looks like a great trip. So when are you going back?

Congrats for a great hunt and very good trophies, I specially like your eland, an old warrior. And I hope to find a lechwe like yours on my upcoming hunt.

Thanks for sharing !

I'll be back 1 day, but it's a long term plan, I want to hunt Cape buffalo in 10 years.............maybe 8!

Congrats, great trophies!

Nice pics. Do you have a waterbuck picture?

No sorry, my mate does, he'll hopefully add it to this soon

Great trophies and great report- congrats! Thanks for sharing

That is a nice one. Thanks for posting!

Congrats on a great hunt! Some beautiful trophies there. Really like that you used the old "obsolete" :p 30- ought-6 :A Big Hello:.

Really think too many(me included) get excited about super speed. I found I shot the 30 06 better so that's what I took, and to be honest the ranges I encountered were perfect for the 30 06 so no need for a magnum.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
