I have really been enjoying the write ups about everyones hunting adventures of late, so we have decided we will try our hand at doing some daily hunting reports for everyone as well.
My stepson Chris and I will be arriving for our hunt with Jacques at Hartzview at 7:15am, on June 13th, (sorry for the time Jacques, haha). We will be getting picked up in J-burg, for the scenic trip to base camp.
As with a lot of step-father/step-son relationships, the teen years were difficult, but as he is now pushing 20, things are at least civil these days. I hate the term ''step'', so I will refer to Chris as my son.
I have been to Africa 2 times before this, and enjoyed it immensely, once in the Eastern Cape, and once in the Limpopo. On both of these adventures, I went alone. I had a fantastic time, and fantastic hunts on both these previous trips.
When I decided to book with Jacques at Hartzview, I was excited as can be!! Chris stopped in a couple days later for a visit, and I told him about my new plans. I caught a bit of a glint in his eye, so I offered him the opportunity to join me, and after a long thought process, (aprox 2.3 seconds), he jumped on board. Phone calls to bosses were made, additional flights booked, all within 15 minutes. The stage was set!!
We will send in daily reports, from Hartzview, or as time and situation allows...
Let the adventure begin!!! :cool::D

I'm confident you'll have a great trip Lorne. I don't know what you'll be doing for pictures or if you will upload them while you're doing your daily report, but if so I'll offer one piece of advice. Internet service at the lodge is not quite what we're used to in the U.S., it's a bit slower. Not awful, but noticeably slower. So, take your pictures in as high a resolution mode as you can for future use. But, copy and save them off to a "medium" format so that they're at about 100KB or smaller. The pics will still show up well here on AH, but will upload much quicker. At the end of the long day of hunting, you'll appreciate having the extra time.

Now actually I'll offer a 2nd piece of advice. The wireless reception seemed to be best in the dining room. We stayed in the chalet right next to it and generally got good reception there too, but sometimes not so much.

Have a great trip, looking forward to your report!

Good luck on your trip.
The audience for the report awaits the first instalment.

Good luck on trip! I hope you both have a great time!

I totally second that!

Your in great hands there and look forward to the updates. Good luck!

Lorne,

The AH world is anxiously awaiting your first report!

:popcorn: Ok I'm ready for the report.:whip:

Well due to internet problems at Hartzview, our daily reports could not be done, so I will just give a very quick report now that we are home.
Chris shot a nice blesbok and springbok, but no warthogs were seen in our time there.
I shot a 5.5 inch duiker, a big male lion, 3 jackals, 2 baboons, a 15.5 inch tsessebe, a black springbok, and a HUGE male brown hyena!! My other two wishlists were unseen, (steenbok and caracal.)
The weather was fantastic, cold mornings, but cloudless warm afternoons, food and accomodations were good.

Congrats, on the successful hunt, can't wait for pictures!

I know what you mean with that internet in Africa, I was at Huntershill Safaris for 5 days before I could get the internet to work. Looking forward to some more details and Pics of your animals once you get rested up.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
