This was my first hunting trip to Africa. During my time in the service, I have been to Egypt and Kenya. My soon to be wife came along, she had never been outside the western hemisphere. Our hosts were Richard and Carmen Cawood.
This was a cull hunt for mountain reed buck, impala, and a cow Buffalo. I ended up modifying it once on the ground to add a Kudu. After the hunting was done, our hosts had arranged for a number of day trips and overnight trips to several national and private preserves in the Eastern Cape; Ado and Mountain Zebra N.P. were among them. What can I say about Hunting RSA, other than I cannot recommend them enough. Not a big operation but small and personal. My girl and Carmen really had a great time doing girl stuff while I was hunting with Richard. It was absolutely perfect situation for the both of us.
I flew United AL from Newark to Jo burg and Jo burg to Port Elizabeth. We used Afton Safari House in Jo burg for our overnight stay in Jo burg. Additionally, Afton handled all the gun licenses prior to arrival and had someone waiting for us upon arrival to walk us through the process. Can you say smooth.
As for firearms, I took along my 30-06 (pre 64 M70) and a recently acquired M77 African in .375 Ruger, early version- no brake. The only thing I may change is if I were ever to hunt buff again, I would up it to something in a .400 caliber range. Had a 45”+ bull between us and his cows, he gave us “that look” and we were an only about 45 yards from each other. At that moment, I really wanted my PH’s .458.
okay now for the photos!
