Jeff and Jim from the USA made their way over to Africa for their first Safari with Wintershoek. They hunted at our Karreekloof area, and it was Jeff who was pursuing a Cape Buffalo. Jeff was guided by legendary PH, Johnny Vivier. They tracked an old daggaboy for several days, and finally the opportunity presented itself for a clear shot.
Jeff took his first shot on the Buffalo and could not manage to get another shot in on time. This set up a day of tracking to find the wounded Daggaboy. They tracked the Buffalo until dusk and decided to call off the search party for the day. The next morning, PH Johnny and the crew decided to take the tracks from the beginning.
This was a good 3 km away from where they last saw the buff late afternoon on the previous day. One of our Special Forces Bushmen trackers then radioed in to let them know that he had blood on a running Buffalo track. This breakthrough saved them 3 km of tracking. They moved in on the location, and about another 1 km further is when things got real…
Scooby, who is one of our PH’s dogs, smelt the buffalo, which at that stage had doubled back on his tracks and was waiting for Johnny, Jeff and the rest of the crew… The Buffalo did not expect Scooby to come running into his comfort zone, which startled him out of hiding, and he started charging in the direction of Johnny and Jeff. It took a couple of follow up shots to bring him down, and the entire ordeal was over.
Scooby definitely saved the day and saved everyone from serious potential injuries. This was a great team effort that ended in fulfilling a past 15 year client’s dream to becoming a reality....
