I recently picked up a Nice Pentax ED Glass Spotting scope It came with a Variable Power Lense that seem to do ok on all diameter bullets up to 150yds but after that it craps out, I want to replace it with a lense that I can see bullet holes out to 350, I realize that trying to see a 223 hole at 350 may be a push but 30 cal and up should be doable. My problem is that nothing I can research seems to help with picking a proper eyepiece that will give me the Magnification I want any help would be appreciated

A little bump for help

What are you looking for Rob, which Pentax eyepiece would be best?

Yes I Know I'm going with ED Glass I'm just not sure which lens would give me proper Magnification at the range, my present Pentax is a 65 series 11

I don't have much experience with Pentax but I can sort most holes out at 3-400 with my Swarovski spotter at 30X. I bet your scope will work just fine if you change up your targets to anything besides black or use a dirty bird type target. I have a hard time sorting out holes at 200 on black targets.

I use Splatter targets but a 350 the variable power sense just doesn't cut it I want to get away from a variable power and go to straight power but at 350.00 for an ED lens I want to make sure I get the right one, whats the power of your Swarovski

20-40X, at the high end I have a hard time not getting a bunch of movement, even on a good manfrotto tripod. 30X works great for me.

I guess my best bet would be to find a Pentax dealer and try a few eyepieces

Maybe take a target that has been shot and try it in the parking lot.

If you are using it during the middle of the day when there is mirage, no spotting scope will see small detail clearly. When it's cool or overcast that's when a good quality spotting scope will shine. I have a Kowa prominar 883 which is fantastic when the conditions are right. A 25-60 x zoom is all you need. Any higher magnification and the image will darken some what.

Like said, 350 yards is a long way even with a Swaro and Manfrotto. Smaller bullets make it much harder. The Shoot and See targets really help me. There are some larger round shoot and see for shooting at longer ranges. They work good for me.

Do they make bullets smaller than 338? Lol

Lol! For some, yah. My go to gun is a 7mm RM. My 375 H&H still hasn't seen a hunt yet. I don't have any 338s right now, but have always had an interest in the 338 WM... Maybe one day.

I just picked up a .17 HRM. These bullets are very small and make tiny holes in paper! The bullets are only 17 grains in weight... Crazy. But they sure make a great mess of these ground squirrels. ;)

Cheaper than another eyepiece. I didn't realize they are that cheap.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
