What is there to know about hunting in Uganda? I recall reports of lots of Buffalos, and a mature population with many older bulls.

Are there many outfits that operated there? Any recommendations?

Any species in particular that are found only in that area? What about the Big 5?

I would be interested in Bowhunting and it seems like a newish opportunity to hunt game that is not as spooky as other more pressured hunting areas?

I’ve never hunted Uganda. The PH I had in Zimbabwe, Ade Langley, was starting an operation there in 2013. His company is KOS (Karamojo Overland Safaris). I spoken with him several times at the shows. Several on here have hunted with him.
Ade is a great guy and ran a great camp. Just someone to look in to.

I have also hunted in Uganda, but that was 30 years ago with an outfitter who no longer exists and a game reserve manager who also passed away in the meantime. So I want not recommend anything, just say that it's a beautiful country with diverse areas in the northeastern and southwestern parts where I hunted. The buffalo and antelope populations were very good, but I did not see elephants.

There’s only 4 outfitters in county, so relatively easy to compare. KOS, Uganda wildlife safaris, lake Albert, and an outfitter in the south on lake Mburo. They generally cross list areas to offer all the species in Uganda, but each outfitter’s primary area holds an advantage over the other’s depending what you are looking for and type of area you want to hunt. Then there are a lot of independent PHs offering hunts through those outfitters, mostly in south and through Uganda wildlife safaris though it seems.

I've hunted there, tons of giant impala, east African zebra, and big defassa waterbuck and warthog to go with the buffalo. they also have Patterson's Eland and Sitatunga and East African bushbuck.

A bowhunter just hunted the area i did and was quite successful!

How do the Prices compare to other countries? If it is on the higher end do you think it is worth it?

A good reference would be to look at Uganda pricing on worldwide trophy adventures website. That’s Uganda wildlife safaris. All had similar pricing. I find Uganda price sheets confusing but much more clear in direct communication with outfitters. I added extra days at an affordable rate to average out cost.

To answer your question:

Prices are higher than most countries, not quite as high as TZ and some Zambian hunts. Definitely worth it once if you can swing it to see all the lush green, and big bodied animals in the southern part anyways!

One of the great hunting areas. I have hunted there with Chrisitan Wirth - Uganda African Safaris. Outstanding buffalo, bushbuck and a host of other animals. No elephant hunting. Great people and great experience.

If you go to WTA and look at their Uganda offering, you will see some videos of buff hunting there and get a sense of the terrain. There seems to be more scrum cap bulls there than most places. It's not a traditional tracking type hunt. There are large herds visible in the open. Be prepared to shoot at longer distances for buff.

If you are on Facebook look up Gareth Lecluse hunting. He is a Zim PH with CMS that hunts Uganda part of the year. He’s a good guy too!

I’ve never hunted Uganda but have travelled through the country extensively. When you cross the boarded from Kenya it was like walking into a different room. The people were very friendly! One of my favourite African countries along side Namibia.

Yes, the people are very friendly. My brother-in-law is there right now (something to do with a church) and will be reporting back I'm sure.

I believe that @JKO HUNTING SAFARIS operates there

This! I know @cpr0312, @PHOENIX PHIL and several others on this forum have hunted there with Jacques in the last couple years. Good references.

In addition to the animals that @cpr0312 listed in his post, @JKO HUNTING SAFARIS can also hunt Topi and Hippo. Leopard are there, but you cannot import them to the USA. That's a shame, a French client killed a very big leopard while we were in camp in October 2022. There are also hyena, but that requires some advance permitting I believe. Lots of them there. The zebra are officially called Grants Zebra. You will see them everywhere, they are gorgeous.

As mentioned by others, Uganda is very beautiful, very green with lots of water. There is tons of game in the species available for the most part. There are a few others that are hard to come by, a reedbuck and oribi for example.

The first camp opened to hunting is south of Kampala and lies on the western bank of Lake Kachina. Lake Mburo is to the west with the national park of the same name wedged between camp and the hunting areas.

You can read my hunt report here: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/uganda-the-pearl-of-africa-with-jko-hunting-safaris.71633/

@Houston Bill also hunted with us, his report is here, including an absolute monster East African Impala: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/uganda-epic-safari-with-jko-hunting-safaris.74978/

Jacques is also working on opening an area in the north of the country, but I'm not sure if that is open yet. I will let him reply to this thread to answer that question.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I can also PM you a price list that at least covers the area in the south that we hunt. Just let me know if you'd like to get that.

EDIT: Forgot to add that one of Jacques hunters this past fall was a bowhunter. He took a lot of animals including a very nice Patterson's Eland.
