This past weekend I had a nice time at the Texas Trophy Hunters Assn. (TTHA) Extravaganza in San Antonio. They also have this same event in Dallas and Houston. While there were a few cheap knife and beef jerky vendors, I thought it was a worthwhile trip with outfitters and vendors that had good setups and were worth talking to. Got fitted for some Kuiu hunting clothes by their knowledgeable staff, got a good look at some of Trijicon's optics offerings, and saw some of the gorgeous Texas whitetail bucks taken during the 2023 season competing for the TTHA People's Choice Award. I'll be attending in 2024.

A few weeks ago I attended the New Braunfels sports and outdoor expo, and would NOT recommend. Almost entirely mattresses and beef jerky.

I'm planning to attend a DSC South Texas Chapter event in Austin on 8/24, the Whitesmoke Brigade black powder shoot in Canyon Lake on 8/26, the Houston Gun Collectors Assn. show on 9/23, the World Skeet Championship in San Antonio the weekend of September 29th, the Lonestar NAVHDA Training Day on 10/7, the UT Horns & Clays Shoot on 10/14, the Precision Rifle Expo in Navasota on 10/21, and the Texas Free Trappers Rendezvous on 11/11.

What else should I be on the lookout for in 2023 and 2024? Interested in anything hunting, gun dog, historical shooting, modern shooting, fine guns/collecting, falconry, classical equestrian, military or Texas history, and books on all these things.

Hope this is helpful and hope to get together with some of you all at an event or two before the year ends!

You definitely need to make the trek to Dallas in January for DSC…

Can’t wait to host all of you that have interest. Prime bird season. Really exciting.
What birds in January there?
