Once thought to be a neatly dead cartridge, the .257 Roberts seems to be making a comeback. Both loaded ammo and brass have become available recently, and at a much better price than 2 years ago.

Hornandy SuperPerformance at $49.85 and Nosler Custom Grade at $54.41 per box.

Both Hornandy and Nosler factory ammo is available again at reasonable prices. No, it's still not the PPU 30-06 at $17.99 a box some of us remember, but 2 years ago the Nosler was going for $120.00 a box, IF you could find it.

Nosler is very proud of their .257 Roberts brass, and up until last week was in stock at Natchez Shooters Supply for $57 a box of 50.

I'm totally unashamed to say that this out of stock situation is because much of this brass is now on the shelves of my reloading bench.

The wonderful thing about the Bob is that 6mm Remington can be necked up, or 7mm Mauser can be necked down to form brass. Not the best quality, but PPU 7mm Mauser brass is fairly common and cheap if you look for it. Brass life is also quite good if you don't hotrod it to max pressures.

The biggest reason for my love of this cartridge is it's power on medium game along with soft recoil. For a youngster, lady hunter or any recoil shy person, it would be hard to find a better cartridge than this. For coyotes through Mule Deer, and their equivalent in Africa it's better than the 6mm's, but doesn't overdo things like some overbore 7mm's. It's not to hot, it's not to cold, this porridge is just right.

Anybody else have a soft spot for the .257 Roberts? Feel free to post pictures of game you have hunted with the Bob, or your favorite rifle in the .257.

After guiding many first time/youth hunters with .243's; I much prefer the .257Rob for deer and highly recommend it for recoil sensitive/new shooters.

I wanted a 257 since I read about it in high school and finally got one a couple years ago - a vz24 action with an Adams & Bennet barrel. My load is a 117gr Hornady SST and IMR4955 in PPU 7x57 brass, at just under 2900fps. It shoots sub 3/4 MOA for 5 shots.

I don’t have any pictures, but I shot s feral hog with it this year and it performed very well. I’m hoping I can get a deer with it this fall.

Honestly deer,hogs and coyotes I can’t tell a bit of difference in them
If they bring black bear season back I would rather the 257 r of the 2
But would use my 358,338 or 45-70 than either of them lol
The bear in fl have grown
When I first hunted them in the 80s I think 75 lbs was min weight to harvest
The last one o knew about being hit was a 3 year old that was nearly 500 lbs
A 100 lbs bear and a 500 one are different animals lol

I saw a sweet .257 #1 International in SS a while back at a gun show, but figured I'd get it on the way out. Nope, gone a few minutes after I passed on it. I have seen a few Ruger Hawkeyes in .257, and they don't seem to last long either.

My custom Roberts is a dedicated Pronghorn rifle, and I'll also use it on wheat field Muleys.

Using +P brass I load the 110 grain ELD-X to just over 3,000 fps MV using either H4350 or StaBALL 6.5. The 110 grain bullet is plenty for the mentioned body weights.

Yea I don’t think they are fl panther’s any more
When Fwc brought in the true mt lions to breed with them.
I can’t put a aungus bull on cracker cows and have cracker cows anymore.
And that last time the opens bear season and the number they want taken in a week happens in a day.
We have bears in county’s they said don’t have them and the cats to.
There one on a cam less than a mile to the west about 400 lbs
And one to the east that was with on 500 yds or the property line about 200
There a guy with 500 bee hives to the west and we are looking at being in 100
So just a matter of time till po bear shows up
I might not get to arched to the bees but he better stay away from the cracker horse and cows

I recently swapped into an FN 1953 in 257 Roberts, and have installed a Timney trigger and topped it with a Leupold Vari X II 4-12; but still need to get it to the range for the first time. I haven't fired anything in this caliber since I was in high school over 35 years ago, and that was with my mom's Remington 722. It did a first class job on a whitetail doe at the time, though.

I commisioned one to be built about 16 months ago by Matt Roberts and it is nearly ready. I love the lighter shooting calibers = 7x57, .308, .280. .300 H&H and others.
