What is it about old hunting photos that we love so much?

hunting-photos-feature.jpg

I guarantee you’ve spent a number of nights at deer camp or at home looking through your grandparent’s old hunting photos.

Maybe it’s the nostalgia of an age gone by. Maybe it’s the respect we have for them that they hunted with no modern technology or conveniences. It took real grit to hunt back in those days.

No matter how you slice it, we love old hunting photos, whether it’s from the recent past or way back. Here are some awesome pictures that really capture historic hunting tradition.

Enjoy.

1. Nice buck and a bear to boot.

Lovely old pics, thanks.

Awesome stuff, thanks for sharing!

I was busy reading an article about my great grandfather and fellow ranger in KNP when you posted the old photo's...thought I would just add it.....for the good old days..

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK – This year’s Kudu Awards, organised by SANParks in partnership with FNB, was combined with a very special event – the official opening of the Nombolo Mdluli Conference Centre which was named after Cpl Nombolo Mdluli, a game ranger in the Kruger National Park (KNP) from 1919 to 1958, along with the unveiling of the statue of Nombolo, witnessed by the hero’s son.
In 1926 Cpl Nombolo Mdluli saved fellow ranger Harold Trollope, who was stationed at Malelane at the time, from certain death by shooting a wounded lion as it was about to charge Harold. Apparently the lion was so close that it fell dead onto Harold’s legs. Harold never forgot this deed of bravery by his ranger corporal. For many years after Harold’s departure from the Park, he still sent Nombolo an annual gift of £2. Corporal Nombolo Mdluli had nearly 40 years’ service in the Kruger National Park.

Thanks for sharing @TMS !

Jerome, love all the old pics you have on this site! I have scrolled through them many times

Great pictures. Really fun to see. Makes me wonder what generations from us will think of our pictures!

Great pics !

Great pictures!
What I find fascinating is trying to figure out which rifles those old guys were using.
I found the following....Winchester 1876, 1886, 1892, 1894, 1895, and two model 1908 or 1910 Self Loaders, more than one Savage 99, a Marlin 1895 and 1894, Remington Model 8 Self loader , Model 11 Shotgun and Model 14 Pump.
A pretty complete cross section of American guns from the turn of the century.

Thank you for sharing! The old photos of Fred Bear were of special interest
To me. In the late 1960s his hunting show was the first one I ever saw on TV

Thanks for sharing. I certainly enjoy the nostalgia and romanticism evoked by old hunting photos and stories. I did not hunt as a child, so much of my early interest in hunting came from reading hemingway and others and wanting to find out what its all about.

I love these kind of pics. The ones of Africa can really send me into daydreams. How incredible would it have been to experience these place both here and there before man had much impact.

I dig the guns as well. I have a few of those models :-)
