Guys and Gals,

To my astonishment i always thought that S.A had ALREADY quite a good number of species (40-42 species) to be hunted...hell, was i wrong...with a bit of research i compiled a list of current huntable species (introduced and endemic) in SA - please feel free to add on if i had miss a specie...

I wonder how much in Africa?

If the color variants are in there, there certainly should be a place for East Cape Kudu as well, just to be consistent if nothing else.

still greater kudu, still belong to one specie in SA...even the springbuck color variance, still stays common springbuck.

Tiger and Jaguar - ludicrous!!

@Diamondhitch and @Bushwack are both correct...... Those are all the same genes and the same species in a purest view. However if a hunter is collecting trophies and making a wish list, many times the variations make the list as a separate line item. No sense arguing it, if you want a long list, put them on separately. If you want a "pure" list and don't want then on, leave them off... Purely personal preference.

Personally I have the 2 kudu and several springbucks on my list. AND chocolate fallow deer as well the "normal" and lighter ones (Which I already have

I think the point of the thread is "there are one hell of a lot of critters to hunt in RSA!" and if you want to fill your trophy room with a lot of interesting animals, you can definitely find a lot of candidates.

@Bushwack as you have a few small critters such as meerkat, what about the mongoos'? Are they huntable? And all the various rabbits and hares? Down in Cape Town I think I saw common grey squirrels that look like they came from North America? Rock Hyrax?

If I have my way, I would love to add a bunch of these small critters to my game room.

Im not trying to start the whole color variant argument, just pointing out an omission for Jeromes list. There is no question that all color variant springbok are the same species and enough qualified opinions on both sides of the East cape Kudu argument to justify a stance on either side. At the very least, they are distinct enough for a large number of hunters to covet them as a separate trophy for their collection to warrant mention.

If you remember, we shot a bunny on my trip. That thing was massive, when compared against those running around in Southern Indiana. The back legs I find at home were the size of the front legs on theirs. No difference in the taste of the meat, except how it gets seasoned. IF you haven't tried soaking Peter Cottontail in Sprite overnight before cooking, you should give it a whirl. Everyone at the lodge enjoyed that one.

Toughest thing about hunting them is getting the damn things to stay still long enough for a shot!!!

not much of a recipe, really. I just drop the cleaned meat, already cut up, into a large bowl. Fill the bowl to the point where everything is covered with the sweet sensation of Sprite, and cover it with plastic wrap.

The rabbit was dunked around midnight, and on the brai around 7 pm the next night. I think I skipped any extra seasoning, but I don't recall for sure. Everyone was surprised at how sweet the meat was.

Now days, I pull one from my freezer, sometimes soak it and other times just thaw. I'll broil it in the oven ten minutes one side, drop in the flank pieces, and do five more minutes. Lemon pepper seasoning has become one of my preferred rabbit flavors.

Las week I did one like that while making breakfast. Tossed it in the lunch box for work. When I got to eat it around 4 hours later it was just as good as cold turkey after Thanksgiving dinner! I nearly ate the whole thing myself.

mmmm, how can i forget...you and the 'young ones' was up till midnight with one of the 'smallest, no antlers / horns, fluffy tail, wooly skin trophy' i have seen in a long time...
