Travel Requirements for Ammunition to New Zealand

Has anyone taken ammunition only to New Zealand? If so, do you still need to apply for a visitor firearms license and then apply to import ammunition? My family is going over in June and will be vacationing for awhile after the hunt. I thought it might be easier to use an outfitter's rifle rather than tote my own around the country for a couple of weeks. Also, we are arriving and departing from different locations so leaving my rifle with the outfitter isn't really an option. The outfitter has provided me the type of ammunition that shoots well from his rifle and suggested I bring my own, which I would prefer to do rather than rely on ammunition that may have been left in camp by previous hunters. Any information is helpful and appreciated. Thank you!

Or has anyone taken a rifle and then traveled the country after the hunt? What did you do with the rifle? How did you complete the application where it asks about how the rifle will be secured while in country? TIA
