USA: Another Season Is Upon Us

Well this year started off like so many others with a busy schedule at work and big plans for the upcoming hunting season here in texas. We have access to multiple properties across the state which always makes for a fun hunt.

In addition to the normal properties we hunt we also made our usual applications for the various state draw hunts. Much to my surprise I opened my email in mid August to a notification that me and my son had drew alligator tags. So Research began and an effort in earnest to find access to a boat more suitable than my 21 ft bay boat. Thanks to a lot of folks that gave us some great advice on gear and tactics we were feeling pretty good. Unfortunately a few weeks before our hunt the boat I had lined up to borrow lost a cylinder so we had to resort to the big boat and make due. The parks and wildlife staff at the WMA were fantastic and set us up in an area with deeper water and easier access for our boat. The down side was our hunt came on the heaps of a tropical storm that had water levels in the bayou about 2 ft higher than normal so finding sign was difficult. Our hunt was very successful and ended with a 6ft and 8 ft alligator. This is definitely a hunt I will be looking to do again

Our next hunt has become an annual tradition and it is a father son hunt that we put on at a buddies ranch. We normally hold it on “youth weekend”. But due to the way Halloween fell this year we kicked it out to the opening weekend of general season. My son shot a really nice boar and a doe but more important was the time spent with good friends and families enjoying gods creation

We shoot a lot of does and cull bucks for a local ranch close to home and the following weekend my we were able to get my son on one of the bucks they were wanting shot

Then this past weekend I was able to get my son on a great cull and his best buck to date. He was a 6.5 year old 8(tried to be a 9). That was extremely dominate and not the caliber of bucks they want breeding does. This buck came in ears pinned back and ran every other deer off the feeder including a 4.5 year old 10 that would score in the 150’s

Congrats to your son and you, great start to the 2021 hunting season! That last cull buck your son bagged would be hard pressed to make it into next year where I hunt. Thanks for sharing your hunt report!

Yes I am pretty much relegated to full time guide, camp chef, skinner, processor and photographer these days and really wouldn’t have it any other way.

We will be headed up to some family property after thanksgiving to chase mule deer whitetail with the potential for Aoudad and maybe if just maybe a free range red stag
