My wife drew a bull bison tag this year and signed it over to our 10 year old son. This was the toughest hunt I have ever been on! Not physically at all but mentally. My son spent over 200 hours in a ground blind waiting for a bison to come to salt. He never had a single bison come in to the salts he sat but had a real close call with a young bull that another hunter passed up and messaged us to try to get. I really believe he would have taken that bull if the wind was not swirling as bad or he was a foot taller.
I hired a outfitters that I had dealt with while guiding disabled kids. My main reason to hire him was to not mess up other hunters while scouting. I know this outfitter and believe he is a great guy but there were some situations that were just crappy on the hunt between him and another outfitter. Which really put him out of sorts. Due to my complete instances of staying out of their pissing match we were lucky to stay out of the middle of it. I Love our public lands here just the people have a tough time respecting others and not being greedy. I spoke to almost all the other hunters and they all but one hunter felt the same the outfitter need to stop their pissing match. The hunters really just wanted to hunt and didn’t care about the outfitters and would help whoever needed it.
In all it was a great trip with some real good time spent with my family. My son and I had a female mountain lion walk within 18 yards of us. She then went to water around 60 yards and drank for minutes. When she finished drinking she called back and forth to her kittens. That same day we had a falcon kill a flicker woodpecker right in front of us. What a great day that was. We had a couple of completely uneventful days as well but that is hunting I guess. Being a spot and stalk Hunter we normally can make something happen so this was kinda new for me.
My wife and I traded places and she sat with Alex while I took our daughter exploring. That was a great time for us
and we got to see lots of cool stuff. I actually seen the biggest porcupine I have seen and the first for my daughter.
