Velocity of 8X57

Just for fun...............fired 3 shots thru Chrono yesterday with 22.5" bbl Sauer bolt. This is a different batch of Sellier and Bellot 196 grainers. (different from that of 5 years ago). T=75F, elev 4988 ft Velocity ave=2615.....energy 2977 ft lbs................and once again, I could not duplicate the S&B velocity OR the accuracy with my handloads......kind of first for me......................anyway, FWIW on the old 8X57..................FWB

They load them hot overseas for sure. Domestic fodder would run about 2250 fps., if that.

That is so true...........I think there is still some worry about old .318/.319 bores being used in domestic loads. My hand load is a 200 grain X at 2451fps which was plenty powerful for my needs. I always considered S&B pretty low on the food chain in decades past, but my recent experience is quite different. They seem very good...........FWB

S&B is the only maker I can find for 8x64s ammo to feed my custom Mauser and its good shooting ammo, same bullet I suspect, 196 grs.
Its rated velocity is just slightly above the 8x57 stuff.

Sure wish a domestic manual would list some top loads for the 8x64s. Such an obscure round most have never heard of it I guess. I like it a lot.

Sessto........................with a lifetime of shooting, collecting, studying and testing.....I have, over the years, owned over 200 rifles in many obscure calibers....................and even I have never seen or fired a 8X64. I am intrigued. Is it close to my 8X68?............................FW Bill

Its just about between the 57 and 68 in power. Just think 8mm-06 Plus P. Drive a 150 gr to over 3100, 175's and 180's to about 2900, 200's and 220's to 2700 plus.
