Wanted 22 Rifle In Bozeman MT

Headed to MT end of week for a fishing trip then stopping up to Great Falls to visit an old friend. I want to buy him a 22 rifle as a gift as hes talked about getting one but with health issues/job issues hasnt been able to move it to the front of his financial priorities. I bought him his first shotgun years ago and his in-laws have plenty of property which is why he's wanted a rifle to tinker with on the ranch.

The problem is, its not as easy to run into rifles at big box stores as it used to be. Looked on sportsmans warehouse website and they dont show any stock. I was at cabelas here in Wisconsin this weekend and they didnt have any in stock either. Not wanting to fly with one so hoping to pick one up and hopefully 50 rounds (like gold now) when get to town.

Anyone recomend a local store that has 22 rifles in stock. Love to grab a semi-auto but beggars cant be choosers. If not a store, whats chance someone here lives in the area and would be willing to let one go? Ruger 1022, savage 93, etc. Just want something reliable so he dosnt get discouraged by it. My end goal is to get him to join me on a hunt in next couple years. Hes on his second hip surgery (33 years old) from his time in airforce, so may take a few years but have to start somewhere.

For ANY .22 rifle, check Wal Mart. I know, I don’t particularly like shopping there either, but they may have a Savage or Marlin in stock when everyone else doesn’t.

You might check with @Rickmt. He is in Belgrade, MT, which is where the Bozeman airport is located and just a few miles northwest of Bozeman. He might know of a gun shop or two in the area.

Shedhorn Sports in Ennis, Mt. stop by the distillery and have a snort of Bighorn Bourbon while you are there. I assume you will be fishing the Madison while you are there? I fly into Bozeman Thursday.

The bob wards in Hamilton has plenty of rifles in stock. Not sure they have ammo of the correct caliber to feed them tho.

There is a scheel's in Great Falls, and North 40. Might try calling some of these before you try and go in and waste time while here.

Also might check pawn shops if you strike out everywhere else.

I’ve not had problems flying with ammo in a checked bag and in the factory packaging. I also put it in a small pelican case in my checked bag.

Tra3 you’ve flown different types of ammo with only 1 gun? I’ve had such shit luck with TSA and guns I’m always a little iffy. Have like 5000 rounds of 22 so if cool to fly with 9mm that’s easiest.

You maty check out buds guns online. They have a variety of .22s. Pay them directly, ship to ffl in Bozeman, do paperwork, pick up and done.

I’ve never had TSA check my ammo box, especially not for a domestic flight. Inside the USA I’ve never had them ask what caliber rifle I have or what ammo.

Ended up finding one at Scheels in Greatfalls. Savage semi auto they had like 8 of. Luckily picked up 22 high velocity at walmart in bozeman as they only had standard velocity at scheels. Thanks everyone for the help.
