can you bring warthog ivory from south africa to the usa

Warthogs are importable to the US

Many hunters have brought back the tusks in their luggage or carry on. If you want the skull or cape a permit is needed from the USDA.

I believe that I read that if you bring back a "processed skull" that there is no USDA involvement. Now if you want to bring the unprocessed cape or skin then it needs to go to a USDA certified shop or tannery in a crate by itself. Now the crate can be inside of your other crate that has your other trophies in. That is what I had planned to do with mine but all the warthogs that I was looking at gave me the slip.

You can indeed bring them back. It is my understanding that they require a vet inspection!

As a trophy it doesn't need to go to an approved establishment if it is thoroughly cleaned as a mount ready to go on the wall or mantle. At most, CBP Agriculture (the actual inspectors for USDA) will inspect the shipment to make sure the skull and ivories are clean as required. If the skull and skin is coming back to be made into a trophy mount here it has to go directly to a USDA approved facility for processing. If it is a processes item like a bottle opener it's good, I've brought back a couple in my luggage. Declare them of course, but chances are they won't even be looked at.

thanks for all the info guys!

Hello there. I’ve been wanting to introduce myself personally & chat with you about hunting Nilgai. Give me a call sometime…

Best,

+1 Great to deal with. I purchased custom rifle. No issues.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
