What’s your hunting bucket list

Headed to Hawaii in May to hunt Vancouver Bull and maybe Black Hawaiian as well.

Who with in Hawaii? It's been on my list (maybe not bucket level) for a while.

I have hunted several times already with Nahele Outfitters and going with him again.

Mike Vitousek is the owners name.

Good luck in Hawaii. Love to see how you do.

Bighorn (never gonna happen)
Bull elephant (maybe soon budget constraints)
Spear a nice yellowfin tuna (getting fatter and older every day)
solid typical representative muley (try every year I can, refuse to pay or leave home unit, hasn’t happened yet)

I have low expectations and high hopes. First moose in 2023, first African safari in 2024, and looking forward to taking my family to Namibia in 2026 and getting my boys excited about hunting and passing it on to the next generation. They have been shadowing me deer hunting for the past couple of years and were with me when I helped their cousin get a whitetail last year at 13 years old.

I love any opportunity to be in the outdoors appreciating God’s creation. I’m up for any sustainable fishing or hunting that fits my budget and free time especially when it aids conservation and benefits the local communities.

I didn’t start big game hunting until I was in my 30’s and am grateful for every opportunity I get.

As far as specific plans:

Whitetail hunting every fall here at home, moose, elk, pronghorn and mule deer as draws allow

Elk hunt in BC Oct 2025

Plains game in Namibia 2026

First Cape Buffalo hunt in 2027

Continue to look and take opportunities as they come.

One of the prior threads about the hunting the Big 5 had me thinking hunting goals and bucket list hunts. I’d like to complete my dangerous 7 by the age of 50 and spend my 50th in Africa with my family hunting that last specie. Probably rhino, currently 3 of 7 complete. If another hunt doesn’t derail plans, figuring 2 species per safari, lord willing this should be relatively readily accomplished.

What else is on the list? What else are true bucket list hunts?

For me water buffalo and banteng in Australia, a Marco Polo ram and mid Asian ibex, and a Lord Derby Eland.

I’d like to make it back to Alaska for a big brown bear and Kamchatka Peninsula for a moose.

I’ll continue to hunt mid west whitetails and sprinkle in a few hunts in the states.

What do your hunting dreams look like?
Well mine right now is to finish the 4 Spiral in Africa. I have the Kudu and Nyala. Hopefully in May I will have the Bushbuck and Eland. Then going for the Tiny 10. AND..... of course whatever comes in between LOL.

Addicted to Africa with a GREAT outfitter. CJ Safaris

What about the other five major spiral horns? There may only be four spiral horn species in South Africa, but there are Nine major spiral horns across Africa. Even more if you count all the bush bucks and eland variants.

On the less exotic side
Kudu
Gemsbok
Springbok
Crocodile

On the exotic side
Western buffalo
Bongo

Well I’ve only been to SA once. Going back so right know it’s just the 4. But this deal is addicting. !!!!

I used to have a list guy, or be a list guy. Then I started shooting more animals in more areas all over the world and my list got to be quite a bit smaller. Because I just want to hunt the same 20-30 things over and over.

Here are some hunts I don't care if I ever go on again, as well as some thoughts on hunts I just don't care about.

1. Big European driven hunts. I think I am done with this. They are very painfully boring for the price tag and time involved. I have yet to kill anything on a drive hunt, and maybe if I was killing stuff every time I would be happier about it.

2. Over-subscribed public hunts. I did a deer hunt in 34 in New Mexico, probably saw 200-300 trucks in the field and an absolute mountain of dudes in orange. This was a draw hunt. Went during the weekday and it might have helped. Could have killed a couple of bucks, but I never had a safe shot with all those folks in the woods.

3. Serious put and take hunts. Been tricked a couple of times before, not my thing. Hard to figure out how much land a guy has and how big each pasture is. But this isnt' for me. Free range is first choice, but not always available.

4. Hunts where public intrusion is a problem from day hikers. I did a hunt in Slovenia last year on a Saturday and Sunday and it was a train wreck. Every stalk on chamois was blown by hikers. The outfitter could have booked me on the weekday. Would have been fine.

5. Specific hunts for a hardly noticeably different color variant of sub-species. I wouldn't pursue a hunt in Zambia for a the Elipsis Waterbuck or in Spain for pyrenean chamois, unless I was already going there.

6. In that fold, any interest in a Weatherby award is greatly overshadowed by my interest in only going on good hunts with good people, in good country.

I listened to a podcast recently by the guy that own WTA talking about his Weatherby pursuit and the amount of uncomfortable situations you have to get in to chasing a Weatherby or Conklin award. I don't think it is for me.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
