What do you use to prime 416 rigby cases?

Lee Ram Prime - not the sexiest tool on the loading bench, but if you’ve got the appropriate shell holder you can prime it.

I use my RCBS Rock Chucker.

No problem.

Yeah, can't go wrong with this one.

I have Lee, RCBS and Sinclair priming tools. I use the Lee hand or bench mounted tools for most rifle calibers, the RCBS for pistol calibers and the Sinclair for anything requiring real precision.

The Lyman is one of the few handheld tools available that will fit nearly all African calibers, but I don't own one.

The Lee Ram Prime is probably your best option, especially considering the quantities you are likely to load in that caliber, but it's my least favorite of everything mentioned. I simply prefer a bench mounted tool.

I'm kind of the opposite. I had one of the Lee bench ones and that nearly gave me a heart attack when it jammed and then blew up. I packed that up and donated it to a friend afterwards and didn't look back. IIRC they might have had a recall or safety concern with them blowing up and had to change the model design a bit afterwards.

Forster Co-Ax press with the the big boy shell holder plate. Very smooth and positive... every case.

Thank you for all the replies. What I ended up doing was opening up the primer body above where the shell holder inserts. Only a few .000, works just fine now.

My Lee bench prime is less than a year old, so likely is the updated design. No problems at all after several thousand rounds.

The concern was only with Federal primers.

I've had nearly every brand of priming tool jam over the years, and the key is to NOT use excessive force. If you have to muscle anything during reloading, it's probably best to stop and see what's causing the problem.

Once had a close friend and shooting buddy that was also a Champion Bodybuilder. He was getting cases stuck in his sizing dies and asked me to see if I could figure out the problem. After looking at his setup and watching him size a few cases, I asked what kind of case lube he was using. With a confused look on his face he asked "What is case lube?". He though it was a totally normal thing to use 200 pounds of force on the press handle to resize a case. :E Strong: A can of Hornandy spray case lube later, problem solved.

In my opinion the rcbs bench model is the way to go. I've tried them all and I feel this is the best design for ease of use and doing volume it's got one kinda flaw. It has a proprietary bolt that holds the handle on and acts as the fulcrum for the leverage and whatever kinda metal they used to make this bolt is prone to failure. I've broken several of them over the years and of course rcbs will replace it but hassle of being down and having to ship it out and wait for the return sucks. That's why I own a second one that is on ice just for this situation but other than that it's a great tool

I made a new one out of 4140 as it would take too long for one to get here and the importer doesn’t seem to care about service. My other gripe with it is that the primer seating pin thing can stick in the shell holder, it just catches and will often drop back down by itself, just something to watch while using, otherwise it is fast to use
Gumpy

My lee hand primer will accept a shell holder that fits 416 rigby but the body is to narrow for the base of the cartridge.

RCBS makes a primer die that you mount up top of the press. It includes two ram fittings for the relevant primer sizes. The shellholder sits atop the press in a priming die. They are cheap, about $35. They are very precise because they are dies and you can adjust seating depth with great precision.

That's what I use on my zero press that has no other means for priming cases. It's far more precise than my lee hand priming tool that does a half-ass job with botched cases occassionally.
