When you have run out of reasons, even to yourself

for the purchase of another firearm, What do you say to yourself when you pass the used rifle/shotgun rack and one cries out "BUY ME!!"?
Don’t look too long and keep walking!

In order to control my impulse, I dont buy on impulse.
What I do, and only when I become aware that I might need another firearm, I make sure I really need another firearm.
I try to make the difference between what I like, and what I need.

Then, I make deep research of what type of firearms, what caliber, will suit the purpose itended. (this research of mine, is at lest a year long)
Then I decide on the budget.
Then I go for practical research for 2 or 3 options, depending of availability of models, and manufacturers on the market.

My list "what I like" would be very very long. Impractically long.

But I purchase only what is necessary. However, once I need specific firearms, one of conditions is that I like it as well.
So the filter is first that I need, then to find appropriate model, available on market, then to define the budget, then I need to like it as well.
Then to go to legal licensing process, and once the license is in pocket, then to buy.

I am target shooter in several disciplines, and hunter for small game, feather, and bigger game.

Buying strictly on "Ï like" is another category of firearm owner - that is collector. I try not to be collector.

Most of my recent firearm purchases have been for someone else...........wife, daughters, son-in-laws. I have told myself, I am getting to a point in life where I personally need to quit acquiring stuff. Lately, during this COVID-19 pandemic, I also feel a bit guilty buying another gun and end up sending a donation to the local food bank or the Salvation Army.

Keep walking. I have one of those that's been sitting in the safe for years. It's dead money. Thanks for reminding me to get rid of it.

Good man! My wife and I have also been contributing to our local food bank. Sometimes we/I get carried away with the plethora of available new to us/me cool firearms that would be nice to own. I find myself taking a step back and realize it’s just stuff and there are more important things to spend money on. Will I stop buying firearms? No. But I’m much more selective about which I will actually USE and not hibernate in my gun safe like the ones I’ve accumulated in the past.

A little off topic here, but in today’s world of buying firearms online instead of perusing through a local gun shop, it has amazed me in the last couple of months to see the stupid high bids people are placing on Gun Broker for firearms! Guns of questionable quality and value are being sold quickly and I’m not talking black guns or semi auto pistols. Stuff that used to be reposted for a couple of weeks is being sold on the first listing. Talk about “Do you take a credit card”? Too many people with too much leisure time AND a credit card? I guess there will be a lot of these for sale later when the hangover wears off!

Check to see if the firearm is sold then relisted. There are more than a few shill buys on that site.

Shill? I think I know what you mean, but could you expound?

For me, it's a matter of whether the rifle/shotgun/pistol fills a gap in my collection. For example, I have two very nice 20 gauge shotguns, so not interested in anymore 20's. However, I'm not crazy about the 12 gauge field gun I have and would trade it for something else if the opportunity arose. Same with my rifles. I'm happy with my rifles, but if I had some extra cash and could find a nice, pre-owned double in 450/400 I might be tempted. It fills a gap in my 300 winmag--375H&H--416 Rigby battery.

Simple, buy it. But first I look to see if there is another I want so I have more negotiation leverage on a multiple purchase;)

Shill bidding is when someone connected to the owner of the item bids. Over the years I've been watching auction sites, it's not an uncommon practice. The key is to put the highest bid you're willing to pay and let it go at that. I've done that and got beat out on the final bid by five dollars. Two weeks later, the same item shows up on the same or other site and it's being offered by the same seller.

Thanks! That’s what I thought. I’m new to this, but when I look at the bid history I see a lot of the same “NR” or A+1 rated bidders multiple times in the bidding. Should be illegal? NR sellers or bidders shouldn’t be allowed.

All new bidders (first time bidders) are NR (no rating) until they make a successful first buy. Eliminate NRs from bidding and you kill the system. We were all NRs to begin with.

As far as seeing mulitple bids from the same bidder, on Gunbroker specifically, that is exactly how the system works. Let's say a rifle is on auction and the current bid is $500 and the max bid that I am willing to pay is $700. So I enter a $700 max bid and the system will show the current top bid is now $510 with me being the top bidder. Somebody else comes in and bids $520 and my bid automatically jumps up to $530. So the same guy or someone else comes along and bids something higher, say $600. Again, the system will jump my bid up to $610 now. In the bid history, you'll see all these as multiple bids.

GB also has the 15 minute rule at the end of a bid. If someone makes a bid at the very end of the auction, the auction will be extended 15 minutes from the last bid. The last rifle I bought, a "NR" bidder apparently didn't know about this and at the last second bumped the bid by $10. My bid automatically went up and the auction was extended 15 minutes. Then he did it again and my bid automatically went up. I ended up getting the rifle at about $80 under my max bid.

When we built our retirement home I had a vault room installed in my office. I am not an example to look to if you are trying to practice restraint!

I have to have a need for another gun. For instance, I have an AR 15 from my 3 gun days but I bought a bolt 5.56 because my hunting rifles are bolt guns. I wanted the same action for practice and reloading drills. Muscle memory. Recoil is a whole lot less, too so I can run a lot more rounds in a session. My only "impulse" buy was a 9.3x62 and that is because I can substitute it for my 375HH.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
