Ive exhausted my google fu.. so Im hoping someone here might know the answer to my question..

does anyone have any idea where Steiner gets the glass for their scopes and binos?

an assumption would be AB Schott since most of the high end German and Austrian manufacturers go there for their glass..

but I can find no actual evidence of this..

Im specifically looking at the Predator line of scopes.. Ive found an absolutely smoking deal on a 2.5-10x42.. but the only steiner product I have ever looked through is military issue binos (which were extremely good in terms of ruggedness and also had very good clarity, brightness, etc... not high end swaro clarity.. but certainly at least equivalent to mid grade zeiss, swaro, etc)..

If it’s a deal, I’d pay my money and take my chances.
Predator 4 2.5-10x42 NIB... MSRP is $1039.99.... available for about 40% off that value..

Im thinking thats a pretty incredible deal....

BUT..

A swaro Z3 2-10x42 is $769.. and occasionally you'll see them on sale around the $675 mark..

I know the quality of the swaro Z3 (Ive got one on a kimber 308.. its excellent)..

At a little less than $100 than the unknown steiner.. Im sorta leaning toward the swaro (unless I can actually find a steiner to look through.. or get a little more information about how it compares to the swaro z3, etc)..

I am tempted though.. thats some pretty small money for german glass..

I've heard for years that Schott is the source for their glass. They buy the glass, then apply their proprietary coatings.

I think most companies keep this information close hold for very good reasons.

I have a Steiner GS3 that I think was the model previous to the predator.

This was put together in the Burris plant in USA but glass was coated and sent from Europe. I too would assume Schott as well.

It is incredible scope. Eye box is nuts. Clear and bright as most of z3’s (much better imo…). I don’t have a bad thing to say (heavy?)

I would get that scope. I always look for more Steiner GS3’s.

I have a Steiner predador and think it is as good as Swaro scope. Swaro binos, however, are better than Steiner binos.

Just a heads up, the whole predator lineup is their "cheaper" line compared to military line. I used to sell their stuff. The predator series scopes as binos, but saying that, the binos are really good in general. The predator series is put together in the California if I remember correctly. Parts come from Germany, Steiner is part of Beretta holding company who owns Benelli, Beretta and Steiner/Burris.

Imo Steiner binoculars are world class
Swaro = the best spotting scopes ( especially for filming sheep or other game )
Leica = range finder
I have used that combo now for 30 + years

Steiner? I'll add an observation for discussion balance. I watched a new set of Steiner, supposedly fogproof/waterproof, binocs fog and fill up with droplets during a hunt on Kodiak... along side a set of Bushnell compacts that remained unaffected:) Steiner warranty- what warranty?... Thank goodness they weren't mine. At the point of fatal failure, what does glass quality in scopes or binocs have to do with anything? IMO, the really tough military binocs that set that standard are the Commie-Bloc Zeiss. Their downside is weight of course.

I have same exact Steiner pred 4. Great scope, got mine about 30% of msrp from euro optics. Definitely a deal at that price

Steiner warranty- what warranty?...

Steiner claims their optics and binos (everything produced after 2014) carry a lifetime warranty..

Considering Burris owns them now.. and Burris has a very good reputation for honoring its warranties.. I'd think steiner would do the same (at least for now)..

Had one Steiner predator - it had really good glass, just quite a bit heavier than the swaros. If it’s for a bench rifle or something you’re not taking on long hikes it won’t be an issue tho - not that heavy…
I have been buying a few of the trijicon scopes on sale from Europtic - some great glass on those too - was pleasantly surprised by the Huron line for clarity and weight. The Tenmile are really nice - but again those are not super light scopes

I will concur, I accidentally ran over my Steiner militarys and sent them in to repair, 2 weeks later a box arrived with a brand new set . No cost to me
as a boat captain I have been in hurricane weather and monsoon, Alaska 70 knot wind and rain / snow and my Steiners have never had any issues fogging or a nitrogen leak
but some small % might have a QC problem but never had a warranty issue
same with Swarovski

Im mostly looking at it for a "blind" rifle.. a 30-06 that is for the most part a whitetail gun.. literally have to walk it about 300 yards from where I sleep at night at the lease to the blind that I hunt from.. weight is really something of a non issue for this particular rifle..

You’re going to be really happy with it

Agreed. I have had two pair of Steiner bino’s for 30+ years. One fogged when my wife left them outside during a storm. Steiner replaced them with brand new bino’s at no charge.

I believe that Steiner uses Schott glass with multiple coatings. However, there is no clarification to these facts, yet I purchased a Steiner Predator 4 2.5-10 x 42 with the E3 reticle a couple of years ago and the glass is outstanding with no flare, none. I'm currently in the market for the Swarovski Z3 with the one inch tube (3- 10 x 42) with Plex reticle. The Z3 have the leaf springs in the erector and the Z5 and later models employ coils; not really a big deal with a lifetime warranty.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
