Winchester M70 .375H&H optics/mounts

I ve narrowed my choice of scope for my new to me Winchester M70 .375H&H. Now I’m realizing that there are so many choices for mounts and rings that I need so expert advice. Do I start with the bases and move to the rings? I’ve already been up to Cabela’s and walked out without rings or mounts.
Anyone have a similar rifle that wouldn’t mind sharing their opinion? Thanks

EAW is the best option. Pricy but solid and functional. Holds zero even after many removals.

All my M70's 375 up to 458 Lott have Talley bases and QD rings. Love them, never an issue when going to irons and back to scope. Maintains zero every time.

I have a Leupold VX6 1-6 in Talley lightweights on my .375 Montana '99 (*no iron sights). It's held up just fine.

I put Talley rings and bases on mine. Which ever one you choose be sure that the hole spacing on the rear base matches those on the rifle. Over time Winchester has used three different hole spacings.

That’s exactly my issue. I’ve been to Cabela’s twice. Can’t seem to match up the rear holes. The receiver has a cut out to accept the length of the cartridge. It would appear I’d need to make sure the scope would have enough tube length as well.
What did you end up using for a scope?

I have a vx6 in Talley QDs. I had the Leupold QD rings and bases and didn’t care for them.

Lobster Mike, if your rifle is one of the "newer" African Express or Safari models it needs rear bases with a .330" hole spacing. I can't make up my mind which scope to leave on the rifle. So far I had a Leupold 1.5-4X 20, and an older Swaro. 3-9X 40 installed. For the Swaro. I had to turn the front base around so that it partially blocks the loading port. Not good. I either need to use a different 3-9X scope with a longer tube or go back to the Leupold. Because of the versatility of the 375 H&H you almost need two scopes anyway. One for closer shots i.e. DG and one for further shots on PG. FYI if your rifle a newer magnum the Warne part number is 902/802 for scope bases with the .330" rear hole spacing. Call Warne direct if you can't find them elsewhere.

Lobster.Mike thanks for asking the question, I have the same rifle M70 Safari model, and have been looking at bases and rings also. I want the QD rings in case I have to remove the scope for trailing a wounded animal (buff). I have been looking at a Leupold 2x7x33 in the firedot series. I am open to any suggestions for a setup that works for Buffalo and PG. Also has anyone changed the irons sights on their rifle to something more visible, I'm on target with the factory iron sights, but don't like my sight picture, old eyes maybe? Didn't mean to hijack your thread, just looking for answers too. Kurt

I'm another Warne guy with all of my bolts wearing them including my M70 .375. I've never seen the zero move swapping the scopes on and off.

The rear hole spacing on the M70 in .375 is 0.330" by the way.

Order bases for a post 64 express or magnum. In most product descriptions they indicate the .330 rear hole spacing.

I spoke to the nice folks at Talley in North Carolina this morning and they were extremely helpful. They have bases in stock with the appropriate rear dimensions. I can’t order rings until I figure out which scope to put on it. I like the Leupold and Vortex. Both have mid range options that will fit my budget. However the eye relief is rather short with the Vortex.
Any ideas?

Another choice that I went with on my Mod 70 375 Alaskan, Burris Xtreme tactical bases, picatinny style, two slots to help with scope mounting flexibility:

Used Leupold QD rings. On my DG hunt, I brought 2 scopes, one as a backup previously sighted in mounted in QD rings. Primary scope was also in QD rings.

If I had a scope problem, 2 minutes and new scope mounted and ready to go. Used a VX-6 2-12x44 firedot duplex and an older 2-7x33 heavy duplex as back-up.

This has worked well for me. Both have illuminated dot reticles which my old eyes are drawn to and it shows up very well on dark hides such as buffalo and black bear. Also great for low light and night critters.

I also have used the Leupold stud type QR which returns to “0” well, but I cannot release the tiny lever without a Leatherman tool. IMO, this is not acceptable on a DG rifle.

Been out shopping for optics for the last month. Pulled the trigger yesterday on two Leupold VX-6 HD 2-12x42 scopes, one for my Mauser 9.3x62 and the other for my Daniel Defense 308 win. B&H had them on clearance over the weekend for $350 off their street price (not MSRP), be here on Friday. Have QD rings on both rifles already, Mauser and Talley.
