What is it about 404 Jeffery?

This is closer to what I’ve been saying about the extended mag well, this is a forum member’s original firearm with the extended mag on a standard stock, no extra wood. I believe the curve is an illusion artefact, though may not be. I am still trying to find the picture of the actual style I’m aiming to build View attachment 674404

So that second photo is an extension ADDED onto the top of standard height magazine? Interesting. The shooter always has the option to switch back to standard box and floorplate.

That is indeed an interesting concept: an optional EXTENSION for standard magazine (NOT an extended magazine - which would have to be longer and attached to the trigger guard = "extended bottom metal"). So the original bottom metal (sans the detachable floorplate) remains in the stock. Forward action screw is removed and this gizmo is attached with longer screw. Not clear how the rear of extension attaches. Must be something to do with the floorplate latch for standard bottom metal floorplate? I would like to see how the extension mates up to the standard mag box. The second photo seems to indicate the top of extension is flat side to side and end to end except the rear where there is a housing of some sort for the latch. Seems the two boxes mate with a thin crack separating them. Wondering if the floorplate latch for original bottom metal must be removed? If that is the case, maybe returning to standard floorplate and original mag box capacity is not optional? That rifle was clearly not magnum. No crossbolts or reinforcement pins and the length of extension seems to indicate something like 7x57. However, it would not be difficult to extend the mag box length closer to floorplate hinge. If you could build one of these and make it work as a true optional mag well extension, that would be very very cool.

It looks a little like the extended magazine used on some Westley Richards in .425 Westley Richards.

Yes. Look very closely and you can see a crack between the optional EXTENSION and original bottom metal that is flush with the stock. Note that the floorplate fits inside the walls of the extension except for some overhang at rear near trigger guard. Makes sense. Overhang there controls the depth of floorplate into mag well but in a location protected by trigger guard. Overhang there also eliminates the need to leave a substantial crack at the rear end of recessed front hinged floorplate for it to clear the box when opened. I am curious how the extension floorplate release was engineered to obviously work with original bottom metal floorplate release inside the trigger guard.

This rifle must be 5+1? That is a substantial extension!

Looking more closely, it appears the entire magazine extension is hinged, not the floorplate. Duh! The floorplate does appear to be separate from the walls of extension. Wonder why? Hmmm. Perhaps to get at the magazine spring for cleaning? Very interesting concept. Could be adapted to rifles that are not takedown. An optional magazine extension makes a lot more sense than changing the action and stock to detachable box magazine. Especially for classic designed rifles. The classic look can always be recovered without major surgery. Most extended magazine CRF guns look like shit no matter what the caliber or how glamorous the wood and engraving. A rifle stock that looks 7.5 months pregnant just doesn't do it for me. At all. A magazine hanging down in front of the trigger guard in an unmodified stock is only slightly less ugly. But slightly less is still slightly less. :D. Anyway, I just don't see the need for extending the magazine capacity. Four rounds in the gun should be enough. I'm no fan of spray and pray.

Yes, if I recall correctly, Ruger did a limited run of the bolt-action .404 RSMs in the 1990s, but screwed up the barrel by either going with the wrong bore diameter or the wrong twist rate. Can’t recall which exactly.

Too bad too. A proper .404 RSM, with its integral full quarter-rib, would’ve been both beautiful and affordable.
They used an outdated chamber spec if I remember correctly.

If I could find another one for a reasonable price, an old but-still-serviceable BRNO 602 in .375 H&H would make a great budget rifle for “conversion” to 404J. Have the existing .375 factory barrel re-bored/re-chambered to .404/.423 specs, along with any necessary tweaking and honing of the action for feed-reliability. BRNO 602s left the factory with 25” tubes, so you could trim it back a bit if you wanted to (24”, 23”).

Like so:

And if it was an older model 602 with the integral factory “pop-up” peep sight in rear bridge, it would be more value added to the project.
Dennis Olson has one of my ZKK 602’s now for that very purpose.

I went with .404J because in that action I’ll have a 5 round magazine capacity of hard hitting rounds in a rifle that’s tough as a coffin nail.

With the scope rails on the receiver I’ll have Alaska arms QD rings for a 2-8 scope as well as the option to use my RMR with AHR QD mount and having a cocking piece ghost ring sight installed, the factory rear sight will be removed and dovetail plugged.

I’ve got a lifetime supply of Woodleigh weldcores in 350, 400, 450gr as well as Hydros, Norma brass and 4lbs of Varget on standby…..

If I can ever get the rifle in my hands!

I wanted to get the guns squared away and concentrate on hunting so with .300win, .375H&H, .404J & .470ne I’ve got all my bases covered with some overlap.
