The 375 H&H, the greatest

I went out and did some shooting with my
Ruger No1 in 375h&h and I would say that it’s really in my opinion the greatest hunting rifle cartridge combo I’ve ever had. I have played with many different rifles and have hunted and killed plenty of game mostly deer and elk and coyotes. What I felt after shooting the rifle was this would be the only gun I’d ever need. The cartridge is completely capable and proven power to bullet weight ratio with the ability to go longer shots to close in is there and couple that with the rugged yet simplicity of the Ruger No1 with the ease of the action and manual of arms makes it my favorite rifle or near it. I’ve mostly always loved a bolt gun and have had many over the years and still have some hunting rifles like the 1917s and older enfield 303. Modern bolt actions are still nice but with the handling ease and beauty of the ruger I just feel complete if I could say that or content with this rifle. The recoil was not bad at all the power of that cartridge and the recoil level was balanced to me. If anyone were ever wondering if a 375 H&H in a Ruger No1 were a good option I’d say yes, I enjoy mine greatly.

It's cool that you have a rifle that means that much to you. I love my 375, a pre 64 mod 70 converted to LH and re-stocked by Griffin and Howe, to the point where I can't decide just what is my favorite rifle. After starting with my 375 on my 1st African hunt, I went on to own others, including a 470 dbl and a custom GMA based AHR in 505 Gibbs. I love them all and have more $ into the last 2 mentioned, but if I had to choose between the 3, the 375 would possibly win out.

Maybe a dumb question but how do you convert a presumably right hand bolt action m70 to left hand action?

@WoodencrossIII - YES!!!! The .375 H&H is the most useful cartridge for any big game on Earth, and the single-shot concept--extremely well represented by the Ruger No. 1--is fantastic, especially for the hunter who wants to stand out from the crowd.

Upon my first safari, my PH said that he gets mostly bolt-actions, a handful of double-rifles and no single-shots at all until I showed up with mine.

I hunt most of my animals with the rifle in my profile picture--not a Ruger No. 1, but still an underlever single shot chambered for H&H's immortal .375. You, sir, have understood a thing or two about rifles and about hunting!

I don't know how it was done but it works well. I like the safety in it's original position as I can take it off of safe as I shoulder it. I posted these pics in a thread where another memeber had a win type safety on the opposite side and liked it. The only concern with it is it would be easy to eat a face full of gas if something goes wrong, but partially true with all winchester mod 70s. Sorry if derailing the thread. Love the 375s!

Yep.....if you hand load, you can develop loads that will dispatch anything on the African continent.......but that does take away the fun of having a lot of different guns with a lot of different calibers

That’s cool and unique. I’d love to inspect one like that in person to see how it is done.

the 375 h&h is never wrong, after useing a cz 550 in 375h&h in six hunting trips to africa (PH,s rifle), i ordered a cz 550 in 375 h&h for my self(american stock). its still unfired in its factory box. top rifle.

I have calibers from 17 to 338 single shot/lever/bolt action in over the counter, semi custom and custom platforms. Got the Africa bug and picked up a Kimber Caprivi 375 from someone on this forum and have a new love in my life. Topped it with a Leupold VX6 HD Gen 2 after regulating the sights out to 150 yards. Have been shooting the rifle every weekend on my 400 acre farm can't seem to put it away during the week. Mild recoil flat shooting with 270 grainers and packs a punch with 300's. She's not going on a sheep hunt with me but Africa and everything in between will get the job done!

Try loading up some Cutting Edge Bullets, 235 grain, ESP Raptors @ about 2900 fps. Great for elk and anything else you might like to hunt. It's a whole different caliber then.

Have you used the 275 gr Safari Raptor? It also looks like a good all around bullet.

as i have no desire to shoot a eli, a 375 h&h is fine for me and in a pinch it may even do that.

Hahahah yes I know odd for me to feel that way, but it’s honestly liberating to feel like after all the years and all the guns I literally found The One for me I still like my other guns too,

I chosed the .375 H&H when ordering my incoming custom M98 Mauser, mostly due to its history and also for all the recomendations on this forum. Not to a small degree because of all the posts of Red Leg and others arguing it to be the perfect client rifle. Also the possibility of finding ammunition abroad should be greater with the .375 H&H then just about any other calibre.

A bonus,at least in my case, is that is so usable at home aswell, just about perfect for domestic moose hunting, bear hunting and for red stags and wild boars also. I also thinks it is a good thing to use a rifle as much as possible, both on the shooting range and in the forest, to get better at using it in all situations.

Here in Sweden we are unfortunately only allowed to own 4-6 rifles/guns for hunting and therefore it is good to be able to use the rifle domestic aswell. Aside from the obvious draw back of now being allowed to own more hunting rifles it has the benefit of allowing one to spend more on a high quality rifle instead of spreading the funds on many rifles capable of doing the same as would probably have been the case if I had been allowed more licence spots.
