Since this thread was brought back, what level of .45-70 loads do you use? There are 3, #1 trapdoor, #2 Marlin 95, & #3 Ruger #1. Certainly not Ruger loads, possibly Marlin? Just curious.
Actually according to the Hornaday 11th edition loading manual, pg 741. The max load for 450-400 with the the 400gr DGX Bonded & DGS is 2150 with a max load of 88.9gr of Vit H-165.
So that 400gr Speer load I used to use is very close to the 450-400.
My dog isn't in this fight, however I am a huge fan of the .45-70.
I have personally chronographed a 405gr jacketed bullet out of a 95 Marlin at just under 1800fps.
