As a manager in the firearms industry, I expect my personal hunts to meet the quality of the many writer’s hunts I have been paid to attend. When it came time to select a South African kudu and plains game hunt, I selected Karoo Wild Safaris, which exceeded all my expectations.
Owners Victor and Lindsay Watson make you feel like family, camp is luxurious, food is to die for. The hunt—all fair chase over concessions spanning nearly a half-million acres—is challenging, the game is abundant, the variety of plains game species is vast, and you get as vivid an experience of “Real Africa” as you could dream of.
Terrain is hilly semi-desertic / savanna, with plenty of interesting flora to admire while stalking game. Depending on your fitness level, your hunt can incorporate as much walking as you're comfortable with--Victor will never ask you to do more than you wish to do. Shots usually range from 50 (or closer) to about 275 yards. Even in this regard, you will never be asked to exceed your comfort zone.
My trophies included a kudu, a gemsbok, a nyala and a blesbok, while my buddy (also an industry professional) collected a waterbuck, impala, kudu and gemsbok. If you’re looking for your dream South African kudu or plains game hunt, Karoo Wild Safaris will get you hooked. I know it did me—I booked again for next year.
