    Son's first African hunt advice

Terry: That'll be fantastic! I am still in awe with Africa and I didn't see it until I was 47 yrs old. I can only imagine what a 13-17 yr will think. Sorry to hear about the weather there.

    Son's first African hunt advice

Many thanks for all the advice, especially that regarding the child-related travel documents. We'll be hunting with Makonya Safaris in the Limpopo area. I've hunted with Jimmy and Tyler there 2x before and they're wonderful. Agreed on all the advice regarding practice. We shoot weekly with...

    Son's first African hunt advice

Great advice on the non-traveling parent doc's. Thank you. slam8031; agreed, we're going to take a few extra days to see Kruger Nat Park and visit some local folks via the PH and his staff. It's all about experiencing the world beyond suburban central FL!

    Son's first African hunt advice

Agreed, I love the 6.5 CM. I've taken just about everything here along with PG using that cal and it just plain works without excessive recoil. He has confidence in it and so do I. Half the battle when choosing a rifle in my experience.

    Son's first African hunt advice

Many thanks guys. Agreed on all that's been said here. At this point it's about him and passing along family tradition and tribal knowledge on hunting, fishing, camping, the outdoors etc. Not even concerned about shooting anything myself. (Well, maybe a buffalo if we settle on a price...

    Son's first African hunt advice

Just officially booked a June hunt with my son. We're both very excited. He'll be turning 13 while on the hunt. I've hunted So Africa with the same PH twice, but this will be his first time there. We have a lot of time on the range and in the field together, successfully hunting deer and...

    Trophy Solutions?

I’ve used them twice for a variety of European style mounts and plains game rugs after hunting with Makonya. The work has been excellent along with the communication and coordination with the export company, Zingela. Prices seemed fair though I can’t say I shopped much regarding costs. Just...

Why you never ship a scope to a buddy outside the USA

It all falls under ITAR regulation. Optics, magazines, sights, tactical lights, night vision etc even some types of training. Nothing to fool with. When in doubt check with the manufacturer before shipping anything like this internationally.

Scope opinions for a Ruger No.1 International?

That seems very fair priced. Great scopes. The lack of obj bell on that scope gives you a lot of eye relief room to play with around the rear sight.

Scope opinions for a Ruger No.1 International?

The steel Leupold rings keep the 1.5-5 scope nice and low. This one is 7x57, one of my favorites.

Scope opinions for a Ruger No.1 International?

I have 3 No 1s and find the Leupold 1.5-5 is the scope for that rifle when you consider the eye relief/mount positions inherent with the No 1. I run mine in low Leupold matte rings. No issues with loading or ejection.

    Sako issues

I had the same issue with a synthetic stock Sako in 270 Win. Tried numerous calls to the factory/new magazines but never found a 100% solution. After resorting to duct tape to secure the mag on a mule deer hunt, I finally gave up and traded to a large Beretta dealer. Told him about the issue...

    Scope mounting on 375 H&H

I've had very good results with Leupold rings-bases over the years and have no doubt they'll work well. Mine are their latest rings listed as QRW2. I find the most critical part of the process is use of a quality torque wrench.

    Scope mounting on 375 H&H

I agree. I own several pre 64 Fwts and while fine rifles, I think the new ones are better suited for hard use and travel in Africa. This new trigger is much better than my old ones. It’s a lot of rifle for the money!

    Scope mounting on 375 H&H

I just purchased my first 375 H&H, a new Winchester Mod 70. I’m wondering if there are specific scope mounting techniques used for heavy recoiling rifles? I’m very careful/detailed when working on my rifles but this is my first heavy recoiling rifle. I’ve never had any issues with scope...

    Broadheads for Low Poundage

1" Slick Tricks. I shoot a 60lb bow with 26.5" draw and these have been the most accurate and deadly broadheads ever for me all the way up to bull elk. They shoot to the same point of aim/impact as my field points and have low cost, easy to replace blades. I don't see any room for improvement.

Great place, good people and a squared away airline however, after working with their military and police forces, I believe it’s the last place you’d want to get jammed up with a firearms related problem. Belt ammo pouch

Murray makes great stuff and they’re the only company I’ve found that makes a standard and short height pouch. Their short is perfect for 308/275/6.5. Loop width is the same but the shorter height keeps the cartridges in place better than the taller standard which is sized for 30-06/270 etc...

The Sony RX100 series is one of the defining high-end point and shoot compacts, if not the defining camera in that space. I think Barrett’s expertise from the military side of their business carries over to the way they do Fieldcraft barrels. The barrel is very rigid and the shoulder behind the threads is quite precise. The full-length bedded stock also helps. Really impressive rifles.
