    45-70 for dangerous game?

I have read the Govt. was encouraging the decimation of the Bison. Remove the food supply & the enemy is hamstrung. I’ve also read the .50-70 was issued civilians for that purpose, & had just been decommissioned, replaced by the .45-70. I suspect a fair amount of Springfield Trap Doors were...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

I like IMR3031 in the Marlin 95. It works well loaded down for practice/fun loads too.

Whoahhh, years ago I shot a friends REM 600 in .350 REM. MAG. offhand.. It was very unpleasant & I was shooting a .300 Win Mag. at the time.

    45-70 for dangerous game?

There is more dangerous game than Cape Buffalo. Here we have grizzlies in most of our elk country, I submit grizzlies are dangerous though not legally huntabe. It would be more self defense.

9.3 with Lapua Mega 285’s- question

As others have said, shooting through brush really isn’t a good idea. I’ve tested several ctgs by putting cardboard behind brush & shooting at it. None hit where I’d aimed, most would have given me a huge tracking job.

Boy when someone wants load data they really need some loading manuals. Never rely on data from a forum without checking against a loading manual. Not trying to be smart, but I'd never reload without a manual.

    Hornady

As I get older shoulder shots on game are becoming more sensible, two reasons, #1 two broken shoulders & there’s no tracking, and #2 two broken shoulders & you don’t have to follow wounded game into tangled places where you need a chain saw to get to them. I’ll sacrifice a bit of meat for these...

Reading this thread reminds me of a good friend, since passed away, we hunted together many times over our 15 year friendship. Hornady

I’ve used Hornaday bullets on everything up to & including Elk & haven’t had a single problem. I really hesitate to call Hornaday an inferior bullet. Accuracy wise, I get just over 1/2” groups in a .222 REM. & a .22-250. I like them!

    Bob Nelson 35 Whelen

I chronographed my load today with the 235gr Speer. The velocity is 2621fps with an extreme spread of 12fps. It’s below max & easier on the shoulder. I still have until the 26th for elk & deer. No snow, so it’ll be a little tougher.

Ok, I'm not going to start a mud throwing match but,,, the old cup & core bullets are VERY good used within their velocity design limits. I've used them for years in the .30-06, 7X57, .308, & .375H&H mag. With fantastic results. The Hot Core seems to be one on steroids, according to Speer...

Update! Speer called me back & the rep. told me that molten lead adheres to the jacket very well & performs very well, but they cannot call it a bonded bullet. I asked specifically if the 235gr bullet at 2500fps in the .375 H&H Mag. was suitable for Elk, he said oh yes at that velocity it will...

    Bob Nelson 35 Whelen

I found out the the 235gr Speer is a hot core bullet. I’m calling Speer Monday & ask if they recommend that bullet for Elk. Being a hot core, it may be suitable. Speers description of a hot core is pouring molten lead alloy into a jacket. That should be a bonded bullet. I’ve shot them for fun &...
