As someone who has half baked considered adding a rifle in one of these cartridges to the collection, it appears that the 500 Jeffery is the easier path to take. More factory rifles available in it, easier to convert existing actions to 500J v 505 Gibbs etc.
The only real let down is that...
Full house Norma 500 Jeffery rounds out of a 9.0 lb Sako remains to be the absolute most brutal "sporty" recoil I have ever experienced.
540 gr @ 2,400 fps.
570 gr @ 2,200 fps.
It must be Stockholm syndrome but I keep thinking about this cartridge, albeit in a 12.0 lbs bolt gun.
A Big Game in 416 Rigby would be the classic pairing and what I would go with. With that said, has there been any consideration on adding additional cartridge offerings?
Just goes to show that despite the 458 WM's reputation on this forum as being a "pea-shooter" it really needs to be in an appropriately weighted rifle to tame that recoil.
I think a 458WM should weigh 10.0lbs minimum which would reduce that recoil to ~64 ft-lbs.
My svelte 458WM weighs 8.6lbs...
I believe the argument was not only related to the increased recoil, but the increased rifle weight as well which is becoming too cumbersome to carry on safari.
A typical 577NE double is in the 13lbs range, A 600 NE is 16lbs+ and 700NE is 18lbs +. We are now beyond the era of gun bearers where...
Just repeating what I've heard stated by several of the Pros now that the 577NE is the upper limit of what is still usable in a hunting rifle to carry. The idea is that the 600NE, 700NE, 577 T-REX, 600 Overkill etc. are beyond that limit and are purely exercises in exuberance.
I have a...
Bears in North America yes, Cape Buffalo in Africa no.
A hot 45-70 load produces about the same energy as a 180gr 30.06, with far worse sectional density.
The 577NE seems like a downright sensible choice compared to those other two, also the uppermost cartridge threshold that is "reasonable" to be used by hunters or PH's according to Dr. Robertson.
If one were current at 0/5 and was considering future hunts, would grouping species into combo hunts be the most cost effective way to go about this?
Do you get better prices on elephant / buffalo trophy fees if they are grouped into the same hunt vs individual?
For me, factory ammo availability is more of a consideration.
I have no problem plinking with $10 cartridges as long as I can find them in stock (416 Rigby, 458 WM, 470 NE).
Finding something like factory 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery is near impossible here so there is less appeal.
458 WM really is the Everyman’s Dangerous Game cartridge.
My only wish is that more ammo companies would produce new loads for it.
I’d likely to see 350gr @ 2,500 fps and a hot 500gr @ 2,200 fps.
I have a feeling that the 550 line will never be topped, but I would be supportive of a "premium 600 Lux Magnum" that came with a finer cut of wood, higher quality touch points, Magnum length action etc.
Thinking in the most practical sense, I could see companies adding the least "exotic" of the DG cartridges.
This would likely result in 416 Ruger/Rem Mag instead of 416 Rigby, 458WM/458 Lott instead of 450 Rigby
Not sure if Sako would opt for another 0.510 cal as anything beyond the 0.458...
There have been several threads now regarding the continual decline of this niche industry with rifle and ammo manufacturers discontinuing their Dangerous Game offerings, this thread however will be focused on the opposite.
Post any new releases here whether they be confirmed or just rumors...
With the sky high prices of hunts these days, a 25% tip seems outrageous.
I’d rather a 10-15% tip be baked into the hunt cost from the start and be done with this game of tipping enough after the hunt has completed or guides/outfitters and staff complaining that you didn’t tip enough.
Yeah that would strike a nerve with me as well, but you're almost held hostage in that situation in the middle of nowhere, with 4 trophies.
I keep reading stories like this regarding hunting in the Stan's. It sounds like "customer service" is far superior in Africa and Europe.
Sounds like a grand adventure that was unfortunately ruined by the camp staff.
Also tipping 9 individuals seems excessive...is that a typical number of camp staff for this part of the world?
I wonder how the 450gr 458WM (Barnes) load compares to the full power loads? Velocity is 2,240 fps, energy is 5,115 ft-lbs.
Here is loading data.
Barnes Powder Charge
I really wish I had the opportunity to shoot 416 Rigby Vs 416 RemMag Vs 416 Ruger back to back in equally weighted rifles to see if the difference in recoil is perceivable.
It should be the most noticeable between the Rigby and Ruger.
Would also be a neat experiment to shoot both a 458 WM...
As someone who also dreams of a future elephant hunt, nothing out of South Africa is exportable, correct?
I'm not even sure if I can import ANY ivory back here to Canada with the recent changes..
As someone who owns both a 458WM and 470NE it’s an interesting comparison between the two and how much “less efficient” the 470NE is.
All the classic African cartridges with voluptuous case capacities (Cordite) will score poorly here compared to their standard action brethren.
Also, where’s...
