140 Yard Bow Kill on Warthog!

This video and kill, I won't call it hunting, runs counter to everything I was taught and learned growing up hunting. Animals are not targets for us to use as practice or experimental shots, no one can claim that this was nothing but a lucky hit. At the heart of hunting ethics is respect for our quarry and part of respect is to do everything possible to ensure a clean humane kill, something that can't be accomplished at 140 yards with a bow.

I have no respect for this person and no respect for a PH that would allow a hunter to take such a risky shot. We as hunters live under a microscope; the non-hunting world watches our every move and is quick to point out instances that are unethical such as this. When a fellow hunter violates ethical standards it's important for fellow hunters to call them out as to their transgressions and put an end to this type of activity. Please don't applaud actions such as this.

:E Hmmm:...petrus there is a total difference between a very lucky shot and a great shot......the animal could have wandered off had a piss and come back again from arrow release to its arrival it took that long.....i dont bow hunt but the first thing i noticed was how windy it was and thought what a fkd up idea to even think of having a go with the bow in those conditions. to me thats all it was , having a go to see if maybe he could hit the animal, as there is no way he could predict where the arrow was going to end up in those windy conditions..........
Thats why i said not the shot i will take! Ive been bow hunting for many years and believe me bows are accurate at long range if you know how to use them, we often shoot stationary clay pigeons at 100m and would hit 2 out of 3 shots..... but like i said i wouldn't take that shot.

Glad to see most everyone thinks this guy is a nutbag for taking the shot.

I want to ask you guys do you think its ethical to hunt big game with a bow?

I watched a you tube vid the other day of a guy hunting buff with a bow. He shot it at 30 meters but according to what I saw it took that buff a hell of a long time to die, they had to put another arrow in him as well. Is that Ethical?

I love bow hunting but I put very strict limits on myself on shot over 30 meter and only broadside shots.
It means I loose out on a lot of animals but also mean I don't wound or let the one I shoot suffer unduly.

@Roan , that's a tough question you asked and usually just starts a fight among fellow hunters. I have guided big 5 bow hunts, honestly I don't know how I feel, except must go for clean kill, or instant back up.

Unethical at best but one thing we can all agree on, when it's windy and at that distance the last thing you have to worry about is the pig jumping string when he's out of earshot.

The shot on the first deer was a great shot but should never have been taken, period. As you heard them say in the video the second one was found the next morning STILL ALIVE. It is never a good idea to go for a double with any bow and this shows exactly why, especially with a kid that is not shooting a bow with enough power to get good penetration on the second one in even the best circumstance. Even with a high powered bow you could hit ribs on both sides making penetration on the second animal iffy. Not to mention the angle from being in a stand makes it impossible to get a double lung shot on the second animal. The father should have had him hold off, but the kid can't be faulted too much, due to inexperience. If this had been a seasoned bowhunter, I'd have told him to hang up his gear. Glad they found them both but this a good video of what not to do!

If that is how guys start teaching there kids to hunt we are in big trouble. A good shot is the one you plan out and if it works out you make the shot you take. You think he was planning on taking both. Hell no! what if he had one tag not two tags.

Anyone gun or bow should know to wait till the back deer clears for a opened shot on the deer you want. To many people check this site out that we don't need seeing the stuff like this.

... stupid posting stupid videos that makes us as a group look bad...

A classic case of "guilt by association".

billc, I do not think your reply have to be that crash, if you do not like the video then do not comment' I think it would be nice to talk about it in a respectful way than to be so rude. Thank you for being nice.

Yup and just not a good look at all for hunters. Things can happen but when we just start not caring about teaching new hunters the right way it is going to hurt us big time in years ahead.

The above post was me being nice. I am all for hunters hunting the way they want just not a fan of guys posting stuff that hurts us all on a public forum. I do prefer to not have to say anything bad about any legal hunting but these two videos are just not what hunters should be doing.

Glad they found them both but this a good video of what not to do!
I do agree he is very young and still lot to learn! luckily they watched the video again otherwise they wouldn't even know about the second deer,,!

Given what happened in the video that may very well be true, however an experienced hunter (which pretty much eliminates the need for this statement as it wouldn't have happened to begin with) would have noticed the fact his arrow wasn't right there and quickly would have found the second blood trail, even as minimal as it probably was. Any chump can shoot through an animal with bow or gun and wound a second. It really wasn't 2 deer 1 shot either as it was found ALIVE. Which also brings up an issue I have with the title to your thread- It's not a 140yd bow KILL, its a 140yd WOUNDING with the absolute need to run up and finish it off. That shot was the kill.

All in all I think this thread should just be pulled at this point. Jerome may want to think about applying some rules to posted videos that follow the ethics AH stands for as a whole

I am not a bow hunter but I liked this thread and made sure my boys read it. The outpouring of condemnation against unethical hunting is really inspiring. I think it is also helpful to nonhunters so they can learn the difference. This thread makes me proud to be associated with such an ethical group of concerned hunters. It may also shame the next hunter who may consider such a shot. We are not killers, we are hunters.

Good point, I feel similar, however I am worried worse ones may be added to this, just to get rise out of the rest of us. As others have mentioned the wrong people could see it, and despite our voicing against it, could be used in a negative manner towards AH. Just opinion. Glad you are your boys are getting something positive out of it, however!

I can't see any responsible, ethical member the hunting community really endorsing this kind of thing. Too many weak minded individuals who see this will decide to try similar shots. The good thing is most will probably result in a clean miss. I fail to see anything positive for us to come out of advertising this kind of practice.

Each of us that choose to participate in hunting carry a responsibility to both our game animal and our fellow hunters. Such bad practices reflect on us all much like the poacher is a bad example of hunters.

That being said, keep in mind this is just my position on the subject and not necessarily that of anyone else. My name is Clayton and I do approve this message.

I will have to agree with @Pheroze that this thread is actually positive and will be educational to some...

As I said before I agree it is good we are (mostly) all against these acts, however I think you can see my point about where it might lead if someone continues to find increasingly bad depictions of hunting to post on here. I'm cool with leaving this up, I'd just hate to see more of this kind of thing popping up. I do thank you for taking the time to respond to my post, it goes a long way to know you are keeping track of stuff.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
