Next up we have a 1908 Brazilian contract Mauser in 7x57. Barreled Action only. Picked this up fairly recently for a project, and have too many irons in the fire.

Asking $400 + S&H, obo

Control feed? Correct?
Yes Sir, I believe one of the pictures shows the bolt where you can tell. If not, I can take some additional photos when I’m home. Just let me know what you’d like to see.

These make great affordable hunting rifles! GLWS

Put this in a closet while moving last year and just now found it. Barreled Action still available

I am looking at one here right now in a pawn shop. This one is cock on closing. I believe there are kits available to make them cock on opening? Not that there's anything wrong with cock on closing. I'm just used to guns with cock on opening.

The small ring Spanish Mausers in 7x57 were all cock on close. The LR Brazilian mausers should all be cock on opening…

I’ve got a couple of custom rifles built on Brazilian actions… they’re well made.. among the better contract mausers ever made IMO…

Thanks. I'll have to check this one more closely! Sure looked liked Brasilico something stamped in the crest on top. Difficult to make it out. Last year when I was shopping for a 404 donor action, I was told to look for Czech or Brazilian.

Some questions that may help a potential buyer:
  1. Matching serial number on bolt, and safety?
  2. Barrel maker and twist rate?
Friends, these are some of the finest made and fitted Mausers. I have an original 1908 Brazilian in 7x57, all matching. The workmanship of the metal work, and butter smooth actions are second only (and not by much) to Original Oberndorf Mauser Sporting rifles.
I am just a gun guy that likes Mausers, but the experts (Frank de Haas amongst others) state this truth.

DWM was a consortium formed by Ludwig Lowe and Company Berlin, that included amongst others, Waffenfabrik Oberndorf A/G and Fabrique National, Herstal, Belgium. They were the premier arms manufacturers for Imperial Germany, with a worldwide market. South American militaries were significant buyers. Brazil and Argentina, (1909 Argentine Mauser 98s) were big buyers.
The Golden Age of Mauser 98 production was Pre-WW1.

A M98 action today, fitted in this quality and smoothness, would cost at least a couple of thousand dollars in labor.

GLWS.

Completely agree on Czech or Brazilian. The Brazilian 1908’s and the Czech VZ-24’s were among the best made, used the best heat treatment on the steel, etc etc…

How much will it cost for a competent gunsmith to finish the stock? I beleive thats what is required. A ball park no. will help and some good places that may do the work.

A stock really depends on what you want to spend..

You can find cheap plastic ram line stocks online for $100..

Get a laminate or basic walnut stock from Boyd’s or Richard’s for a couple of hundred that require very minor fitting..

Or have a custom stock maker brew you something up for a cost that ranges from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the grade of wood used, whether the blank is machine made or hand made, whether or not things like ebony tips, checkering, is involved, etc etc…

I have a 08 action in 7x57 and put a B&C stock on it . It’s quite a good stock , and a rifle i wish i had found many years earlier .

Is this plug and play or will require fitting from a gunsmith?

Putting a stock on a 98 Mauser is not rocket science. I did it twice during the past year. First stock was rough factory semi-inletted. The fore end tip I made from scratch and that was a bit more scientific. A Dremel tool with a few carving attachments worked well. I also invested fifty bucks in a carving extension cable attachment. The Dremel tool hung from the ceiling and carving tool wand used like a pen. Turned out very well.

I was about to send it off to be checkered when I spotted a good deal on line for a used well figured 98 Mauser stock. It was already checkered so what the heck I took a chance. That stock actually required more work than the rough factory one. Some bubba gunsmith internal modifications to it had to be fixed and definitely required reinforcement (already a couple of internal cracks starting). It turned out very nice but LOP is a little short for me. I'm ordering a thicker recoil pad from New England Custom Gun.

The takeaway from this diatribe is putting a stock on a 98 Mauser should not be expensive or require a long wait. I'm no gunsmith and I did it twice in one year. First stock was $150 (Canadian) and second one was $200. Sure, if one wants a custom stock made from a special blank chunk of wood, that may take a couple of years and require a second mortgage. However, I would say even a mediocre local gunsmith should be able to stock this action rather quickly (or buyer does it himself) using a quality mail order rough stock. Then it can be sent off to any number of online craftsmen for checkering if so desired. Then the owner can apply finish himself. Many on here can guide him through that. Definitely not rocket science.

Edit: I prepped the barrel, receiver, and bolt shroud for bluing. A moose hunting guide in New Brunswick blued them for $150 and did a very nice job. Not rust blued but the rifle isn't a Rigby or H&H. Good enough.

Of course, if the buyer decides to change caliber, then a lot more money comes into play. Simply cleaning up this barrel and adding sights would not be very expensive re labor. Cost of parts depends on buyer's preference. I bought like new Winchester Safari Express iron sights off ebay for $150. Similar Remington sights were cheaper. I put iron sights on my Springfield but not advisable unless one has proper shop equipment. I watched the gunsmith who put the barrel on my Mauser project install the iron sights on it. Didn't take him fifteen minutes. He charged me sixty bucks (but I left him my drill and taps).

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
