Depend on barrel size , gunsmith put it to the gun , but it didn’t need anything fitting . Also Alu chassis it is also so quite sturdy .

Yes, but even if required, opening the barrel channel is fairly easy. I use a wooden dowel wrapped with sandpaper.

How much will it cost for a competent gunsmith to finish the stock? I beleive thats what is required. A ball park no. will help and some good places that may do the work.

You can usually find bottom metal for a 98 on eBay in really good shape for $150 or less (no pitting, no rust, etc)…

If you’re willing to do a little work (knock off some rust, do a little polishing, touch up some blue, etc) they’re pretty easy to find under well under $100…

I got lucky a few years ago and found new, still in the packaging Parker Hale manufactured bottom metal for $35… I’m guessing it was made in the 70’s)… it’s aluminum rather than steel, but is really nicely cast with all sorts of decoration (rams head, leaves, etc)… it added a very nice (and affordable) touch to one of my mausers…

As @mdwest said it really depends on how much you want to spend. You can find stocks sometimes for well under $100. I found one last year (before I bought this barreled action) for $40 and of course it was gone when I went back after buying this. Stocky's, Boyd's, B&C and several other after market stock makers all have offerings. You can also go complete custom.

If someone owns a screw driver, sand paper, a few other tools, and wanted to pinch pennies by shopping around, you could probably finish this for around $200. Me personally, I'd spend a little more, add sights, nicer stock, bottom metal, etc.

A stock really depends on what you want to spend..

You can find cheap plastic ram line stocks online for $100..

Get a laminate or basic walnut stock from Boyd’s or Richard’s for a couple of hundred that require very minor fitting..

Or have a custom stock maker brew you something up for a cost that ranges from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the grade of wood used, whether the blank is machine made or hand made, whether or not things like ebony tips, checkering, is involved, etc etc…

Brownells do some well priced, basic 'drop in' fit 98 stocks. I don't have any experience with them - but have been curious to see how they go.

I had to replace my Ruger M77 and Boyt was $199 and I am very happy with it. Great stocks
