2024 Deer Season

Ok I’m scheduled in to have a crack on Saturday evening/sunday! Told em no care about a trophy just a deer to get my first run on the board.

Excited and nervous. Using a 30-06 so that’s pretty classic.

Lot of good deer near Bartlesville. That’s where I got my start many years ago. Good luck!

Been chasing coues deer here in AZ. Got this little buck with my daughter last week. Good times.

Those dark chocolate antlers are beautiful!!! What part of the country?
This is a coastal south Texas buck. Chocolate is a trait down here. These deer don’t grow very big. This 5 year old was “big” bodied and dressed out 136 pounds gutted”

Live oak trees and powder sand on the coast is their habitat

Taken on the ranch that has a trim model with ford motor company

dchum, we have very similar habitat here in coastal SC, live oaks and sand. The deer along the coast are definitely smaller bodied than just 45-60 minutes inland. The deer that live on the barrier islands are even smaller body wise.

Very cool to see chocolate somewhere besides Saskatchewan!

Bagged what I believe is the fattest doe I’ve ever seen this morning. I’m pretty sure she’s been on a twinkies and ho-hos diet for the last 3.5 years…

Wife then dropped a nice (more normal) doe this afternoon…

Freezer is filling up nicely this year…

Opening day of gun season got this buck and my grandson got his second. One more grandson to go!

One of my coffee buddies in McKinney just took a buck down near Freer that he said had the most fat he had ever seen on a whitetail.

Side note: this same buddy has a guy near the Galleria in Houston that makes some incredible venison tamales. I've already got 10 dozen on order.

Taken out back this morning during opening day rifle. I like to use one of my vintage rifles. This year I used my first year 1962 Remington 700 ADL 7mm Rem Mag and Weaver K4.

My youngest son with his first TN buck and our friend Mr Tom who let us come hunt opening morning. He’s taken deer in KY and Michigan with bow and gun, but this was his first in his home state.

Field28, those SC deer are some of the weariest deer I’ve hunted anywhere. When I hunted there they still hound hunted them on large private clubs. I was a member of two private hunting clubs in SC. I think the generations of hound hunting them made them nocturnal and spooky.

We killed a lot of deer using hounds. But sitting in a tree stand with bow and killing one was a challenge. They jumped the string like a warthog can do.
