.270 conversion to .338-06

Good afternoon gentleman I'd like to start of by saying your all a terrible influence on me. I was perfectly content to own only one rifle until such time as I started hanging around on here. So far I've bought two more.

Today I bought a Remington 700lh chambered for 270. I really like the fit and feel of the rifle but am not in love with the caliber. Given that the parent case of the .270 is the 30-06 I believe it could be rechambered to either 338-06 or .35whalen could any of you shed some light on this for me. Also which is a better cartridge to rechamber too.

I love my 338-06. 210PT or Swift Aframes really shine in mine. Be prepared to reload though. I use r17 in mine with really good results.

270 win -338/06 -35 Whelen all utilize the same case. It just takes a rebarrel by a qualified gunsmith.

I have a 338 06. Custom rifle built in 1986. Used it on elk, black bear and first PG to Africa....my next 6 trips to SA and Namibia were with a 30 06. Would not go back to the 338 06. Versatility of the 06....180 gr accubonds on PG, 200 gr Nosler Partition on Eland and 220 Nosler Partition on Giraffe, never a failure. Everything from steinbok to Giraffe and all in between, over 120 head in all.

If the .338-06 intrigues you then go for it, but as was mentioned be prepared to reload for it and if you don't reload you could be in trouble.

I have both the 338-06 and the 35 Whelen. Both great cartridges but I lean a little to the 338-06. Norma makes both loaded ammo and brass for the 06 so you can have properly head stamped brass. Whelen ammo is offered by several companies.

A re-barrel seems like it would be cheaper. Plus, I would think you wouldn't have much metal left if you had it re-bored. Anyway I've loved the 35 Whelen from the first day I got one. It's a 700 as well. There is plenty of factory loads for it also, which is a big plus for me.

Yep, re-barrel. Very few gunsmiths would be set up to rebore a old barrel where just about anyone can re-barrel it.

Contact these guys in OR, have had two re bores done with them. They do good work and very reasonably priced, less than a re barrel job.

If you have lots of ‘06 (or .270) cases laying around, go for it. I love the wildcats, even if they’re not practical or cost effective. Otherwise, keep the .270 (or sell it) and go on Gun Broker and buy a brand new Browning X Bolt Hunter .338 WM for $782.00 and free shipping!

I'm as far as one can be east of him without boarding a ferry. There is a gunsmith in my area with a very good reputation and many years experience. I am going to approach him about doing the job. Thank you though I appreciate the response.

I doubt that would be available in left handed but thankyou for the suggestion. I recently bought a .340 weatherby lh which I feel would cover the hot .338 I was thinking the .338-06 would use the same components without being as destructive on deer.

I should have clarified, he will source the right contour and style of barrel you want, but he is not a gunsmith. Someone else has to put it together.
