What would you rather hunt with?

I'm a fan of the 270 but I don't own a 7mm RM so I can't make a fair comparison. These days I don't use my 270 and I have no plans on buying a 7mm RM because I use a 35 Whelen. I set a personal limit of 300 yards for shooting game, and at 300 yards and in no 270 or 7mm RM load can compete with my Whelen using a 225-grain bullet for dropping game in its tracks.

If I had to recommend the 270 or the 7mm RM to someone I didn't know I'd recommend the 270 every time, just because of the recoil difference between the two rounds.
Another Whelen Nut, Bob's Gunna love that post.

Split the difference boys, just say .280ai.

Seriously it's hot on the heels of 7mmRm and I've never owned a 7mmRm or a .30-06.

Hired a 7mmRm in Africa

If I had a bias I would pay more attention to Brittany Boddington than Craig.

Well, since y’all have brought up the .35 Whelen, I think I’ll bring up hand loading my 9.3x62, which one can safely hand load the 286 gr bullets into the 2500 - 2600 fps area, and beats the .270 & 7mm Rem Mag hands down, and still shoots plenty flat to 400 - 500 yds, like a .308 trajectory.
That load beats even the .338 Win Mag!
I like the .35 Whelen as well, and Bob is right, it can shade the .338 Win Mag with using CFE223, and upping the pressure to modern levels.
Here’s to loading the .35 Whelen & 9.3x62 to modern pressure, and in modern strong actions!

Boddington’s wife used a 270 for hunting zebra

Cool,
yes we know you are a fan of Sako's and the mighty .270. I haven't owned one myself, hard to justify another rifle if I'm being practical. If only there was one rifle that would do all I ever need.

Maybe Craig Boddington s wife got your attention with her .270, Jim Shockey is another hunting writer who has an attractive daughter who hunts .

Here is an article by another author that I like, and he hunted in Africa, since he lived there for most of his life. That author is Ross Seyfried.

..284 - .277 = .007" That is less than the diameter of the rifling. A big difference? really??

No but , it's not just the diameter in discussion because the comparison is .270 & 7mmRm

The 7Rm is going to have more velocity, more energy and options for heaver bullets.

My 7mm-08 impressed me and many have been impressed by the venerable .270

I expect that with the continued development of better and batter bullet technologies, the advantages of magnums become less and less important.

True, but at the same time they make the magnums even better as well. I like my 7mm RM. It has killed a lot of game with me for a long time. No failures, no regrets, just performance. I never owned a 270 Winchester, but i do have a .25-'06... it's like a mini-magnum.

The difference between the 270 and the 7mag is primarily the ability of the 7mag to handle bullets heavier than 150 grains. For bullets less than 150 grains there is very little difference considering the game targeted by those bullets. And for larger game that needs heavier bullets one could say that the shooter would be better off with a rifle heavier than a 7 mag.

I remember an article I read in Petersen’s Hunting back in the 90’s described the 7mmRM as .270 velocities at .30-06 energies. I liked that.

I don’t doubt that the magnums get just as much of a boost from new bullets as the old standard cartridges.

OTOH, a classic cartridge with modern bullets and powders may obviate the need for a magnum of the same caliber with its greater recoil, report, and length.
