30-06 Rifle for Plains Game - How Big?

Fun story re bob's favourite 243 and the stupidity of the SA firearms branch, friend got a krico rifle in factory chambering of 6x51, apparently rare, anyway firearms refused to register it as it wasn’t a known cartridge, so he tried 6-08, and they wouldn’t accept that either, then he asked them if they had heard of a 243, when the woman said yes , but that’s not what he tried to register, then she got shitty when he said they are the same bloody thing, and made him get it stamped 243 before it was registered

Oh and as to the 30-06, I’m going to turn mine into a 318 WR

Problem is I also have a brand new smle barrel sitting here as well, and my full wood smle is a fullbore rifle that shoots better than me and my Parker hale safari deluxe is in original condition

Aah … first world problems :D !

I’d have no problem using a 30/06 on kudu, zebra, and less with proper bullets like you described. It’s suitable for eland but I’d be much more selective on the shots I’d take with it. I’d likely opt for 375 in that case if you had it. I’d learn to shoot it well to 300 yards. Eland can vary a lot in body size depending free range or small farm, age, and region. I’ve them with 308, 300 win, 375 and killed them all quickly but I have felt undergunned at times. Eland bulls can get big. I’ve taken 2 in this size category. This one was taken at 250 yards with 375 H&H 300 gr bullets.

That really puts its size into perspective. Crazy they can jump a 8-10’ fence.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
