30-06 - The calibre to love or hate?

Only a fool would hate the .30-06. I simply love it, used it many years in South Africa and Namibia.

When it finally dawned on my simple mind that, any mark I could hit with a 130 grain bullet in my .270 Winchester, I could just as easily easily hit with a 150 grain .30-06 bullet, I sold my last .270 rifle.
I’ve used the .30-06 in N. America and Africa as well (not exclusively with but mostly with 220 grain round nose).
And I agree with others that it is a real beauty for hunting many species world wide.

One word. Overkill!

Just my experience, but on Kodiak no cartridge is “overkill”. There’s too many Hairy VW Beetles roaming around on it.:LOL::LOL:

Maybe we should take a poll to find out how many hunters do not own a 30-06 or a metric counterpart. I'm willing to bet that the percentage is very small.

Did you see what he shot? I’ve never shot a Fox with anything bigger than .308!
But hey if you are referring to Bear as Hairy VW Beetles then can I come along?
Now to Google Kodiak

Yes, but you are American and maybe considering the norm among you countrymen.
Now I’m not a gambling man but the .30 ought six would not be in the possesssion of the majority here .
I think, and I hope I have some idea of what I am saying that .308 would be more prominent among hunters down under.
My feeling is that .243 and .270 are popular as are some magnums and then the metric European chambering s.
I like the 7mm-08 myself but it’s not as common.
The .30-06 is readily available but don’t run that poll based on Australian statistics you might lose.
We use a lot of .223 for spotlighting and it’s the mainstay of professional roo shooters
Now it seems like you Yanks churn out a pile of brass from your AR ..223s but they are restricted here.
In all I guess it’s where you choose to run the poll. We are a far smaller population and economy but for various reasons I think the .308 would be the most common .30 cal in Australia

Maybe, maybe not. While I own three 30-06, Anymore in the US it's a flip of the coin between those two 30's for which is more popular. And I recall a friend showing me some info on an outfit in Australia to cull feral donkeys, camels and such and they talked about using 30-06 and ammo by the case, so it can't be all that uncommon.
