300 H+H 220 grain round nose loads wanted

Ok and thanks for your replies. I have just received this QuickLOAD V 3.6 DATA SHEET, thus can you members that are in the know run your eyes over them please and offer an opinion?

It seems kosher to my unpracticed eye but I may be missing something of importance.

Those are the same numbers I get. The safest way I know to do this is to load one each 58.0, 59.0, 60.0, use this for checking velocity, pressure and sighting in. Then load and shoot 3-5 rounds at 61.0grs checking the same and for group. Good luck I think you will be fine. Let us know how things turn out.

I apologize if you’ve already stated this, but are you using Woodleigh 220 grain round nose bullets, Hornady 220 grain RN, or something else? If you are shooting the Woodleigh or Hornady bullets, I have the current reloading manuals for both.

I agree with others that Alliant RL 16 is not “ideal” for the long and straight walled 300 H&H, but Alliant designates the burn rate of RL16 as slightly faster than RL17 and within the “burn rate band” of the 4350 class of powders. I do know that the Woodleigh and Hornady manuals list loads for their 220 grain bullets utilizing both IMR4350 and H4350. That’s not to say the load data is transitive, so I’d be very careful reading too much into that fact. However, you should be able to find a load using RL16 if you’re careful and work up slowly.

If you want, I can copy the pages of the Woodleigh and Hornady manuals and PM you with them......in case you decide to switch to one of their recommended powders.

QuickLoad is a good modeling program but it is only as good as the information it gets from the various manufactures. I have seen it to be both dead on and aways off. One of the things I like about it is you can come up with different bullet/powder combinations than what is listed in the books. I started using it years ago because I shoot the 8x57is and 8x68s. Most available data for these two are either underpowered or limited to non existent.

To be 100% precise the bullets are actually (if it makes any difference)
Sierra Pro-Hunter 220 Gr RN projectiles.

I actually do.....Sierra (7th Ed.) Reloading Manual that lists the Sierra (.308) 220 grain MatchKing and Round Nose bullets. Not sure if the RN is the ProHunter variety or not, but the data should at least give you a starting point.....I'll Send the page copies via conversation....

Barnes Loading Manual Number three has data for their 220 grain Original bullet, which is a round nose with a lead core and pure copper jacket. The highest velocity load listed is 67 grains of H4831 at 2650 fps. The maximum load for H4350 is 62 grains at 2576 fps. In my experience Reloder 16 is slightly faster burning than H4350. I would estimate that 61 grains is likely a maximum load that should be approached with caution. If a chronograph is available I would not exceed 2550 fps.

Barnes recommended powders are Reloder 22 (64 grains max at 2506 fps) and IMR 7828 (65 grains max at 2533 fps).

My data’s not real comprehensive, I just load 60 grains of 2209 for the Woodleigh RNSNs and 59 grains of 2209 for the Woodleigh FMJs. I’m yet to get around to putting them through the chronograph but I’ve knocked-over heaps of buffalo with them.

It sucks to lose money and 16 might work but if he is knowledgeable about reloading I think he could have picked a better powder. You would probably get better accuracy with a slower burning powder also. I think I would spring for a slower powder and check the reloading manual, most have an accuracy load listed. At least their load would put you on the right track.

Remember, changing bullet brands can alter pressure significantly. Always start low and work up watching the chronograph for anything unusual.

So do you have any results from testing RL-16 and ADI 2209, if so what are they?
