300 Winchester Magnum Load Development

I'm just jumping into reloading and wanted to see if anyone has any load data for 300 win mag:

Bullet:
180gr Nosler Partition
200gr Accubond

Powder:
Hodgen 4895
Hodgen 4831

Primer:
Federal 215M

Additional information:

Twist: 1:10
Barrel make: Christensen
Action Make: Defiance
IMR 4831 @ 74.0 with 180
H4831 @ 74.0 with 200gr
WLR Primer
WW cases

I second the IMR4831 @74.0 with 180 grain. In my rifle with 24 inch barrel this delivers about 3025 fps.

My rifle has a defiance rebel action with a carbon fiber barrel. I shoot 210vld at 76.6 grains of H1000 powder with cci250 primer , I been using gunwerks brass. Really nice brass. Much heavier than everyone’s else’s. Like a lazer. 1/4 moa at 200. I love my 6.5 creed but I thought it wasn’t enough so now my favorite rifle is my 300 win mag

If you need Brass Holler me up

So I did my first road of load development and got some interesting data. I'm an engineer so I did make some nice tables, but I'm waiting to get some more data points.

For 180gr Nosler Partition w/ H4831:
66gr 3.1 FPS - SD 0.97 MOA 2622 FPS V-AVG
68gr 8.3 FPS - SD 2.31 MOA 2733 FPS V-AVG
70gr 9.0 FPS - SD 2.41 MOA 2811 FPS V-AVG
For 200gr Nosler Accubond w/H4831:
66gr 7.2 FPS - SD 2.38 MOA 2624 FPS V-AVG
68gr 16.3 FPS - SD 1.72 MOA 2722 FPS V-AVG
70gr 9. FPS - SD 1.61 MOA 2786 FPS V-AVG

Some things I found interesting was the performance of the Partition. I thought that the Accubond would have a better group since it had a prettier tip etc. That was not the case. I'm going to try a couple of new loads with H4831SC. I also have some H1000 on order.

Remember with the larger case it takes more to make more. Your Partition loads are in the .308 Win to top .30-06 speeds. Accubonds are a bit better. So don't be afraid to boost your charge.

I’ve had excellent success with re-22 in 180 and 200 grain loads.
My recipe for 180 gr accusing imr 4350-maybe worth your time to give that a whirl

A lot of people really like RE 22 and H1000. I have an order in for H1000 and will try and grab RE 22 when I have a chance. It looks like everyone grabbed as much gun powder due to recent events but if anyone knows of any available powder in the Northern VA / DC area let me know. None the less I was able to grab some more bullets and try a few more rounds.

I'm struggling to get google sheets to work and make a legible table, but what I believe is important for accuracy is comparing Spread (in MOA) to my SD. Currently it appears my best loads are as follows:

  1. Partions w/ 66 gr (Load #4)
  2. Swift Scirocco II w/ 73 gr (Load #21)
  3. Accubond w/ 68 gr (Load #3)

Two of my better loads (Load# 3 and Load #21) were at the upper edge of my gun powder loads. I think next series I will try the Accubond with 70 gr and 72 gr and the Scirocco II with 75 gr. I also have plenty of Partitions so I think I will try that with 72 and 74 gr as well.

Finally able to find and order some RE 22 on Midway USA. Still can not find any H1000 out there on the market.

If in the future you find RE22 hard to come by don't be afraid to try Norma MRP.

I snagged the last 2 #s of H1000 the other day at a local shop, IMR7977 is real close to H1000 as well and a little easier to find.

I was finally able to get some range time this past weekend. I've sorted by Velocity SD. One thing I've noticed is that the rifle does like the Nosler Partion, if you compare the Spread and the SD. I also begin to git some loads that left a sticky action that was a little tough to open.

For my hunt in October, I plan on going with my Load #26 the 180gr Nosler Partions with 72gr of Reloader 22. I'm valuing the SD a little higher since I was firing from the prone and note in a sled, so there might be a little human error in there.

Holy Smokes!

That's a super velocity 180 gr load at 3231 fps! Yikes!

Used 165 gr TTSXs and 200 gr Nos PTs in Namibia (Son and I both have .300 Win Mags). Check out Ammoguide.com IMR 4350 and CCI 250s give the best accuracy in that cartridge. 'Started reloading as someone traded me a .300 WM for working on an antique car...the ammo was too expensive for a teen, so making faster, more accurate, 10x cheaper ammo began....This round has been covered and the best handloads known for eons. I can tell you 110 and 165 gr loads off the top of my head, but will have to check the forums for 180s. Here's the 200 gr load that grouped exceptionally well!

What about load #4 at 26228 fps! I doubt that 3231 fps is accurate, probably a mistype.

The OP might find this article interesting, especially:

Factory Ammunition.

Winchester’s initial factory loads for the .300 featured a 150 grain bullet at 3400fps and a 180 grain bullet at 3070fps, both loads have since been reduced. Most manufacturers presently advertise velocities of around 3290fps with 150 grain bullets and 2960fps with 180 grain bullets. In sporting rifles with 24-26” barrels most 150 grain loadings achieve realistic velocities of around 3250fps while 180 grain loads achieve around 2880fps.
